The Call
Benedict of Nursia

Benedict of Nursia was the founder of the Benedictine monastic system. He founded twelve communities for monks at Subiaco, Lazio, Italy. The location is about 40 miles (64 km) to the east of Rome. He moved to Monte Cassino in the mountains of southern Italy later.
The Benedictines are not an "order" as commonly understood but merely a confederation of autonomous congregations.
The "Rule of Saint Benedict" was his main achievement. It contains a set of rules for his monks to follow. The rule was heavily influenced by the writings of John Cassian. It shows strong affinity with the Rule of the Master.
There is also a unique spirit of balance, moderation and reasonableness (ἐπιείκεια, epieíkeia). This persuaded most Christian religious communities founded throughout the Middle Ages to adopt it. It was not restricted to Roman Catholicism after the Reformation.
His became one of the most influential religious rules in Western Christendom as a result. Benedict has been regarded as the founder of Western Christian monasticism for this reason.
Nursia
Norcia is traditionally known by the Latin name Nursia. It is a town in northeastern Umbria. It is located in a wide plain abutting the Monti Sibillini.
The monti is a subrange of the Apennines. Some of the highest peaks are near the Sordo River. The river is a small stream that eventually flows into the Nera. The town is associated with the Valnerina, the valley of that river.
The area is known for its air and scenery. People use it to mountaineer, hike and hunt. Wild boar are hunted there. Sausage and ham are made from wild boar. Such products have been named after Norcia. They are called norcineria in Italian.
The town's known history begins with settlement by the Sabines in the 5th century BCE. The Sabines were a tribe that moved nomadically in the Apennines. The settlement was conquered by the Romans in the 3d century BCE.
It was an ally of Rome during the Second Punic War in 205 BCE. It was known as Nursia then. The earliest extant Roman ruins date from around the 1st century.
Benedict
Benedict and his twin sister Scholastica were born in Nursia in 480. They were the children of Roman nobles.
The Roman Empire was disintegrating during his youth. The Italian peninsula was the scene of constant war between barbarian tribes.
The young Benedict moved from his birthplace to Rome for his education. He soon abandoned the "eternal city" when he became disgusted with the paganism and immorality he saw there. He abandoned his studies and left Rome in 500.
He does not seem to have left Rome for the purpose of becoming a hermit. He only wanted to find some place away from the life of the great city. He took his old nurse with him as a servant. They settled down to live in Enfide.
The tradition of Subiaco identifies Enfide with the modern Affile. It is in the Simbruini mountains about forty miles from Rome and two from Subiaco.
A short distance from Enfide is the entrance to a narrow, gloomy valley. The valley penetrates the mountains and leads directly to Subiaco. The path continues to ascend from the entrance. The side of the ravine on which it runs becomes steeper until a cave is reached. The mountain now rises almost perpendicularly.
It strikes in a rapid descent on the right down to where 500 feet (150 m) below, lay the blue waters of the lake. The cave has a large triangular-shaped opening about ten feet deep.
Benedict met a monk on his way from Enfide. Romanus of Subiaco had a monastery on the mountain above the cliff overhanging the cave. Romanus had discussed with Benedict the purpose which had brought him there.
He had given him the monk's habit. Benedict became a hermit and for three years by his advice. He lived in this cave above the lake unknown to men.
An ancient account of Benedict is found in the second volume of Pope Gregory I's four-book Dialogues (593). The description provides a spiritual portrait of the gentle, disciplined abbot.
Gregory did not set out to write a chronological, historically anchored story of Benedict. He based his anecdotes on direct testimony. Gregory explained that his information came from a handful of Benedict's disciples who lived with the saint and witnessed his various miracles.
Constantinus succeeded Benedict as Abbot of Monte Cassino. Valentinianus and Simplicius bore witness. Honoratus was the abbot of Subiaco when Gregory wrote his Dialogues.
History was not recognized as an independent field of study in Gregory's day. It was a branch of grammar or rhetoric. Historia was defined as 'story.' The story provided a basis for the consideration of reason in experience.
Gregory speaks of Benedict no longer as a youth (puer), but as a man (vir) of God. Romanus served the young man every way he could. The monk apparently visited him frequently. He brought him food on fixed days.
Benedict matured both in mind and character during his three years of solitude. He grew in the knowledge of himself and his fellow man. He secured the respect of those who lived near him.
When the abbot of a monastery in the neighborhood died, the community came to him and begged him to become its abbot. Benedict was acquainted with the life and discipline of the monastery. He knew that their manners were different from his. They would never be able to agree on how to live as a community.
He consented despite his prediction. The experiment failed. The monks tried to poison him. The legend goes that they first tried to poison his drink. He prayed a blessing over the cup and the cup shattered. He forgave them, but left the group. He went back to his cave at Subiaco.
Monks sought him out again. He had established 12 monasteries with 12 monks in each before long.
One of the local clergy, Florentius, was so envious of his reputation that he put poison in a loaf of bread for him. When Benedict prayed to bless the bread a raven swooped down and took it away.
He left Subiaco in about 530 to avoid further temptation. He founded the great Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino. The residence lies on a hilltop between Rome and Naples.
The emperor Justinian I of the Byzantine empire attempted to reclaim land that had been taken by the Ostrogoths from the western Roman empire. This resulted in the Gothic War between 535 and 554 on the Italian penisula and in surrounding areas.
Totila was the king of the Ostrogoths from 541 to 552. He reversed the tide of the Gothic war. He recovered almost all the territories in Italy that the Eastern Roman Empire had captured from his Kingdom in 540 by 543.
Totila's meeting with Benedict of Nursia at Monte Cassino occurred either before or soon after the siege of Naples in (543). Totila had ordered his sword bearer Riggio to dress in royal robes to see if the abbot could tell if he was an imposter. The impersonation was detected.
When Totila met with Benedict he was rebuked for his cruelty towards the conquered. Benedict told the king that it was time for his iniquity to cease. Totila asked Benedict to remember him in his prayers and departed. His cruelty toward conquered people was converted to clemency.
Benedict drew up a rule of life for monastics largely from the work of John Cassian and his own experience. He called it "a school of the Lord's service. " The hope was to order nothing harsh or rigorous.
The Rule gave instruction for how the community was to be organized. It stressed communal living, physical labor, common meals and the avoidance of unnecessary conversation.
A division of time was drawn. An average day included about 4 hours to be spent in liturgical prayer in the Divine Office, 5 hours in reading and study, 6 hours in labor, 1 hour for eating and about 8 hours for sleep. The Book of Psalms was to be recited every week as a part of the Office.
A Benedictine monk took vows of obedience, stability and conversion of life. He vowed to live in accordance with the Rule, not to leave his community without grave cause and to seek to follow the teaching and example of Christ in all things.
A prospective monk would spend a week at the monastery as a visitor. He could apply to become a postulant. A postulant agreed to stay for 6 months. He could not leave without the consent of the abbot.
The postulant could leave or apply to become a novice for a year. The novice could leave or ask to become a brother for 3 years. The brother could leave, take a vow for another 3 years or take a vow for life as a monastic.
He is believed to have died of a fever at Monte Cassino not long after his sister, Scholastica. He was buried in the same place as his sister. This occurred on 21 March 547 according to tradition. He was named patron protector of Europe by Pope Paul VI in 1964. Pope John Paul II declared him co-patron of Europe, together with Saints Cyril and Methodius, 1980.
The chief source of power in Benedict's time was muscle, whether human or animal. Labor could always be done by oxen or slaves. Monks were both scholars and workers. A monk was likely to think, "There must be a better way of doing this" after spending a few hours doing some laborious task by hand.
The result was the systematic development of windmills and water wheels for grinding grain, sawing wood, pumping water, and so on. The rotation of crops (including legumes) and other agricultural advances were also originated or promoted by monastic farms. The monks taught the dignity of labor and the importance of order and planning by example.
An oratory was built so pilgrims could pray at St. Benedict’s birthplace in the 8th century. Monks traveled to Norcia in the 10th century. Contemporary monks care for the Monastery of St. Benedict, built over the Roman ruins of the house of Sts. Benedict and Scholastica.
The effect of the monastic movement was enormous. The preservation of the Holy Scriptures and other ancient writings was due in large measure to the patience and diligence of monastic scribes.
The life of Benedict of Nursia is celebrated on July 11 in the Anglican Communion.

He would go without sleep many nights because he was busy making brooms and husk mats for the Baltimore market. He made the money to buy freedom for himself and his family. Amanda was taught by her parents to read and write. Her father read to his family from the Bible on Sunday mornings. Her mother helped her to learn reading before whe was 8. She was sent to school after she turned this age.
The Smith children were privileged to learn in their early youth. The school only held summer sessions. It was forced to close after Amanda and her brother had attended for 6 weeks.
They were given the option of attending another school 5 years later at the age of 13. The school was 5 miles from their home. They were only taught if there was time after the teachers gave the white kids their lesson. The siblings felt that it was not worth traveling in the cold to receive lessons only if time was permitted. They dropped out after attending for two weeks. They were taught at home by their parents. Sometimes they taught themselves.
Amanda went to work in York, PA after only three and a half months of formal education. She worked as the servant for a widow with 5 children. She attended a revival service for the Methodist Episcopal Church while there.
Her husband was killed in the American Civil War. She had lost two husbands and four of her five children by the time she was thirty two.
She worked hard as a cook and a washerwoman to provide for herself and her daughter She worked through her grief by attending religious camp meetings and revivals. She immersed herself in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church.
Prayer became a way of life for her. She trusted in God for shoes, the money to buy her sister's freedom and food for her family. She became well known for her beautiful voice and inspired instruction. Opportunities to evangelize in the South and West opened up for her.
She wore a plain poke bonnet and a brown or black Quaker wrapper wherever she went. She carried her belongings in her own carpetbag suitcase.
The appearance of women in the 19th century was described as fraught with volatile meaning. African American women struggled to receive respect even when they dressed the part of a lady. The shadowed stereotypes bred by slavery pressed for division between wanton Jezebels and pious Mammies. If free women dressed out of their respective class, judgments were made against them.
Amanda arranged for her daughter, Mazie, to study in England in 1878. They traveled overseas and stayed in England for two years. The captain invited her to conduct a religious service on board on the journey over. She was so modest that the other passengers spread word for her.
She traveled to India alone next. She ministered there for 18 months.
She spent 8 years in Africa evangelizing in churches. She went to Liberia and West Africa. She expanded her family by adopting two African boys. She suffered from repeated attacks of "African fever" but persisted in her work.
She was a strong advocate for the Temperance Movement in Africa and the US. She was invited by the noted temperance promoter, Rev. Dr. Theodore Ledyard Cuyler to preach at his Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, NY upon her return to the USA. It was the largest church for the denomination.
Temperance turned out to be an over-extension of religion into public policy. It was too close to establishment to allow it to stand as an amendment.
Smith pursued her long-time dream of educating African American children by founding the Amanda Smith Orphanage and Industrial Home for Abandoned and Destitute Colored Children in Harvey, Illinois in 1899. She couldn’t support the school sufficiently despite her relentless fundraising efforts.
She left the school at the age of 75 and moved to a home in Sebring, Florida. She passed away on February 24, 1915.

Max Black was born in Baku, Azerbaijan of Jewish descent.
His family moved to London in 1912. He grew up there.
He studied mathematics at Queens’ College, Cambridge where he developed an interest in the philosophy of mathematics.
Bertrand Russell, Wittgenstein, G.E. Moore and Ramsey were all at Cambridge at the time. Their influence on Black was considerable.
He graduated in 1930 and was awarded a fellowship to study at Gottingen for a year.
He was the mathematics master at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle, England. The school had received royal foundation by Queen Elizabeth II.
His first book was The Nature of Mathematics (1933). It was an exposition of Principia Mathematica and the current developments in the philosophy of mathematics.
Black made notable contributions to the metaphysics of Identity. He presented an objection to Leibniz’ Law in “The Identity of Indiscernibles.”
He conceived of two distinct spheres having exactly the same properties in a hypothetical scenario.
The scenario contradicted Leibniz second principle in his formulation of identity. The existence of two objects even in a void with identical properties denies their identicality.

Max Black worked with Peter Geach to translate the philosophical writings of Gottlob Frege. Both Black and Geach were interested in the question of what constitutes identity.

Amanda arranged for her daughter, Mazie, to study in England in 1878. They traveled overseas and stayed in England for two years. The captain invited her to conduct a religious service on board on the journey over. She was so modest that the other passengers spread word for her.
She traveled to India alone next. She ministered there for 18 months.
She spent 8 years in Africa evangelizing in churches. She went to Liberia and West Africa. She expanded her family by adopting two African boys. She suffered from repeated attacks of "African fever" but persisted in her work.
She was a strong advocate for the Temperance Movement in Africa and the US. She was invited by the noted temperance promoter, Rev. Dr. Theodore Ledyard Cuyler to preach at his Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, NY upon her return to the USA. It was the largest church for the denomination.
Temperance turned out to be an over-extension of religion into public policy. It was too close to establishment to allow it to stand as an amendment.
Smith pursued her long-time dream of educating African American children by founding the Amanda Smith Orphanage and Industrial Home for Abandoned and Destitute Colored Children in Harvey, Illinois in 1899. She couldn’t support the school sufficiently despite her relentless fundraising efforts.
She left the school at the age of 75 and moved to a home in Sebring, Florida. She passed away on February 24, 1915.

Max Black
Max Black was born in Baku, Azerbaijan of Jewish descent.
His family moved to London in 1912. He grew up there.
He studied mathematics at Queens’ College, Cambridge where he developed an interest in the philosophy of mathematics.
Bertrand Russell, Wittgenstein, G.E. Moore and Ramsey were all at Cambridge at the time. Their influence on Black was considerable.
He graduated in 1930 and was awarded a fellowship to study at Gottingen for a year.
He was the mathematics master at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle, England. The school had received royal foundation by Queen Elizabeth II.
His first book was The Nature of Mathematics (1933). It was an exposition of Principia Mathematica and the current developments in the philosophy of mathematics.
Black made notable contributions to the metaphysics of Identity. He presented an objection to Leibniz’ Law in “The Identity of Indiscernibles.”
He conceived of two distinct spheres having exactly the same properties in a hypothetical scenario.
The scenario contradicted Leibniz second principle in his formulation of identity. The existence of two objects even in a void with identical properties denies their identicality.
Identity
Max Black worked with Peter Geach to translate the philosophical writings of Gottlob Frege. Both Black and Geach were interested in the question of what constitutes identity.
A always has the property of being A itself. This can never be true of B insofar as it is B. The objects can be identical with respect to the intrinsic internal information when the extrinsic properties are ignored.
The object’s position in space and time remains the only distinction between the two spheres in the otherwise empty space.
Black lectured in mathematics at the Institute of Education in London from 1936 to 1940. He moved to the United States. He joined the Philosophy Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1940.
He accepted a professorship in philosophy at Cornell University in 1946. He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1948.
He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1963.
Black died in Ithaca, New York at the age of 79.

Takikawa
Takikawa is located in the west central part of the island of Hokkaido. The name comes from the Ainu language, 'Sorapuchi.' It means 'under the river.' The city is south and west of a waterall in the Sorachi River. The Ishikari splits from the the Sorachi just west of the city.

Fujimoto Miki
Fujimoto Miki was born on February 26, 1985 in Takikawa. She wanted to become an enka singer when she was young due to her grandmother. Enka is sentimental Japanese ballad music.
Hello! Project offered Miki training lessons when she didn't pass the third audition to become a 4th generation member in 2000. She worded as a receptionist for UP-FRONT Agency during her training period.
It was announced in October 2001 that she would perform as a soloist. She started as a solo singer in 2002. Her first album was released on her 18th birthday in 2003. She was added to Morning Musume as a 6th generation member by Tsunku after the release of the solo album.
Miki became the sub-leader for Morning Musume in April 2005 when Mari Yaguchi resigned. When Yoshizawa Hitomi graduated in 2007 Miki took over as the leader. She was the fifth leader for the group.
She resigned as the leader of Morning Musume after she admit to dating someone in 2007. She remained a soloist with UP-FRONT.
She was married to Shouji Tomoharu in 2009. She had a baby boy in 2012. She had a girl in 2015. She appeared in a Kamen Rider film in 2017.

Constitutional monarchy for Japan was modeled on the one for the Prussian government in 1889. The emperor agreed to share power with an elected parliament.
Japan signed the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902. It was the first alliance signed between a western and a non-western power. Britain had refused to join the Triple Intervention of France, Germany and Russia against the Japanese occupation of the Liadong Peninsula. This peninsula is west of Korea in the territory known as southern Manchuria.
The Chinese empire was close to collapse. The Boxer Rebellion was a peasant uprising that started in 1900. The Xinhai (Metal Pig) Revolution would hit in 1911.
The Republic of China was established after the fall of the last imperial dynasty. Both the Republic of Taiwan and the People's Republic of China claim a start in the "Metal Pig."
The alliance would come to claim opposition to Russian expansion. The Russian revolution of 1905 challenged the authority of the Russian empire in 1905. The Russian Social Democratic Labour Party started looking at the expansion of their Marxist influence after that event.
France and Russia signed a pact in 1902. China and the United States were strongly opposed to the alliance.
The British grew suspicious of Japanese support for Indian nationalism prior to 1905. The renegotiation of the alliance in that year allowed for British interests in India and the Japanese presence in Korea.
The Anglo-Japanese alliance was announced in 1902. It was renewed in 1905 and 1911. Korea became a Japanese protectorate in 1905.
Japan remained an ally in World War I. It was after the war that the alliance ran into difficulty. The Australians feared the growth of the Japanese Imperial Navy. The American government was opposed to the Japanese domination of the market in the Pacific. They didn't want trade with China shut off. Canada was concerned that British imperial holdings in China would be cut off.
The British empire sacrificed the hope of increased trade with the imperial alliance to favor relations with the USA.
Hirohito ascended to the throne in 1926. He presided over Japanese expansion. The accusations of atrocities were presented against him in a trial after the Second World War. He was not found guilty in a trial by Allied forces.
Akihito ascended to the throne after Hirohito died in 1989. He announced the intent to include the people in the representation by government.
Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi died unexpectedly in 2000. Yoshiro Mori replaced him, but resigned in 2001. Junichero Koizumi was elected in that year. He served until Shinzo Abe was elected in 2006.
He served only a year. A succession of 5 different prime ministers served for a year at a time until Abe was re-elected in 2012.

Minamina auditioned for Morning Musume in 2010 and 2012, but was not selected.
She joined Hello! Project Kenshuusei along with Riko Yamagishi in June 2012.
Kobushi Factory was formed with 8 members in 2015. Nomura Minami was included with Hamaura Ayano, Taguchi Natsumi, Ogawa Rena, Wada Sakurako, Fujii Rio, Hirose Ayaka and Inoue Rei. Hirose Ayaka is the leader. There are now 5 members.
Fujii Rio left in July 2017. Ogawa Rena graduated in September. Taguchi Natsume left in December. All three departed in 2017.
Nomura has celebrated her birthday with a fanclub event each year since 2016. She will celebrate her 19th birthday with a fanclub event on February 13, 2019.

Constitutional monarchy for Japan was modeled on the one for the Prussian government in 1889. The emperor agreed to share power with an elected parliament.
Japan signed the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902. It was the first alliance signed between a western and a non-western power. Britain had refused to join the Triple Intervention of France, Germany and Russia against the Japanese occupation of the Liadong Peninsula. This peninsula is west of Korea in the territory known as southern Manchuria.
The Chinese empire was close to collapse. The Boxer Rebellion was a peasant uprising that started in 1900. The Xinhai (Metal Pig) Revolution would hit in 1911.
The Republic of China was established after the fall of the last imperial dynasty. Both the Republic of Taiwan and the People's Republic of China claim a start in the "Metal Pig."
The alliance would come to claim opposition to Russian expansion. The Russian revolution of 1905 challenged the authority of the Russian empire in 1905. The Russian Social Democratic Labour Party started looking at the expansion of their Marxist influence after that event.
France and Russia signed a pact in 1902. China and the United States were strongly opposed to the alliance.
The British grew suspicious of Japanese support for Indian nationalism prior to 1905. The renegotiation of the alliance in that year allowed for British interests in India and the Japanese presence in Korea.
The Anglo-Japanese alliance was announced in 1902. It was renewed in 1905 and 1911. Korea became a Japanese protectorate in 1905.
Japan remained an ally in World War I. It was after the war that the alliance ran into difficulty. The Australians feared the growth of the Japanese Imperial Navy. The American government was opposed to the Japanese domination of the market in the Pacific. They didn't want trade with China shut off. Canada was concerned that British imperial holdings in China would be cut off.
The British empire sacrificed the hope of increased trade with the imperial alliance to favor relations with the USA.
Hirohito ascended to the throne in 1926. He presided over Japanese expansion. The accusations of atrocities were presented against him in a trial after the Second World War. He was not found guilty in a trial by Allied forces.
Akihito ascended to the throne after Hirohito died in 1989. He announced the intent to include the people in the representation by government.
Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi died unexpectedly in 2000. Yoshiro Mori replaced him, but resigned in 2001. Junichero Koizumi was elected in that year. He served until Shinzo Abe was elected in 2006.
He served only a year. A succession of 5 different prime ministers served for a year at a time until Abe was re-elected in 2012.

Minami Nomura was born in Tokyo on February 10, 2000.
Minamina auditioned for Morning Musume in 2010 and 2012, but was not selected.
She joined Hello! Project Kenshuusei along with Riko Yamagishi in June 2012.
Kobushi Factory was formed with 8 members in 2015. Nomura Minami was included with Hamaura Ayano, Taguchi Natsumi, Ogawa Rena, Wada Sakurako, Fujii Rio, Hirose Ayaka and Inoue Rei. Hirose Ayaka is the leader. There are now 5 members.
Fujii Rio left in July 2017. Ogawa Rena graduated in September. Taguchi Natsume left in December. All three departed in 2017.
Nomura has celebrated her birthday with a fanclub event each year since 2016. She will celebrate her 19th birthday with a fanclub event on February 13, 2019.
