I will remember the lesson taught by experience.
The remembrance of wonder will deliver me from weariness.
I will meditate on the acts of the past
to ponder wealth in the truth of observed facts.
Romanticism was even the style for economics
for the Austrian bridle in psychonomics.
My hands will stretch out at night.
I will not tire until I am blessed with insight.
I watch my will for want or need.
The design for law discourages greed.
I am troubled when I cannot speak.
My eyes won't close to allow me sleep.
I remember the years long past.
I consider the days recently cast.
I commune with my heart in thought.
I search for reason by experience bought.
Will the dominant cast me off for ever?
Is success gained only by the aggressive endeavor?
Has love with kindness come to an end?
Has the promise failed to extend?
Providence is sanctified by benefit
when agreement is not defined as degenerate.
It is difficult to love your enemy,
but reason finds the best remedy.
Persuade your adversary to not do damage
to allow competition to work for provident advantage.
Who is so great as our God?
Wonder lines the path on which we trod.
Faith has declared divine power
as redemption from that which made crisis flower.
We are the children for preservation in competition.
Divine will fathered our deliberation on mission.
Let the dead bury their dead.
The heart is there to lend succor to your head.
The water saw the work in the wind.
The waves were raised as akin to chagrin.
The depths were moved
to the aquatic tune.
The clouds shed massive waves of particle plunder
as the heat clashed charge flash lit the darkness before the thunder.
The staggered path of dancing light
announced the presence of the static to sight.
The sound of your power was in the whirlwind.
Your lightning flashed remembrance of what made life begin.
The earth trembled and shook
until a path through the sea of reeds opened like a book.
You made a way through the water
for each beloved son and daughter.
A chariot of flame with horses of fire separated the one from the many.
Salvation watched the ascension by whirlwind to the promise of plenty.
Your footsteps were not seen
yet your presence was felt as serene
despite the tumult of the scene.
The people were drawn along the way
by the exaltation of passage through the fray.
The LORD delivered you from bondage to ignorance.
The transcendence of strife saved you from belligerence.
Christ has set us free to live in liberty with bravery.
We need not ever submit again to the yoke of slavery.

Psalm 77
Voce mea ad Dominum
My voice for the Dominant
1 I will cry aloud to God;
I will cry aloud, and he will hear me.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord;
my hands were stretched out by night and did not tire;
I refused to be comforted.
3 I think of God, I am restless,
I ponder, and my spirit faints.
4 You will not let my eyelids close;
I am troubled and I cannot speak.
5 I consider the days of old;
I remember the years long past;
6 I commune with my heart in the night;
I ponder and search my mind.
7 Will the Lord cast me off for ever?
will he no more show his favor?
8 Has his loving-kindness come to an end for ever?
has his promise failed for evermore?
9 Has God forgotten to be gracious?
has he, in his anger, withheld his compassion?
10 And I said, "My grief is this:
the right hand of the Most High has lost its power."
11 I will remember the works of the Lord,
and call to mind your wonders of old time.
12 I will meditate on all your acts
and ponder your mighty deeds.
13 Your way, O God, is holy;
who is so great a god as our God?
14 You are the God who works wonders
and have declared your power among the peoples.
15 By your strength you have redeemed your people,
the children of Jacob and Joseph.
16 The waters saw you, O God;
the waters saw you and trembled;
the very depths were shaken.
17 The clouds poured out water;
the skies thundered;
your arrows flashed to and fro;
18 The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
your lightnings lit up the world;
the earth trembled and shook.
19 Your way was in the sea,
and your paths in the great waters,
yet your footsteps were not seen.
20 You led your people like a flock
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Economic Romanticism
Adam Muller
b. 6.30.1779 Berlin, Bradenburg
d. 1.17.1829 Vienna, Austria
Adam Muller was a German publicist, literary critic, political economist, theorist of the state and forerunner of economic romanticism.
Berlin
Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany by both area and population. The population was about 3,750,000 in 2018. It is the second most populous city in Europe after London.
The city is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate due to its location in the European Plain. About one-third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals and lakes. It straddles the banks of the River Spree. The Spree flows into the River Havel. The Havel is a tributary of the River Elbe.
Berlin is home to world-renowned universities, orchestras, museums and entertainment venues. It is host to many sporting events. Its Zoological Garden is the most visited zoo in Europe. It is one of the most popular worldwide.
It is an increasingly popular location for international film productions with the world's oldest large-scale movie studio complex. The city is well known for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and a very high quality of living.
The Thirty Years' War was a war fought primarily in Central Europe between 1618 and 1648. It was initially a war between various Protestant and Catholic states in the fragmented Holy Roman Empire.
The war devastated Berlin. One third of its houses were damaged or destroyed, and the city lost half of its population.
Frederick William had succeeded his father George William as ruler in 1640. He initiated a policy of promoting immigration and religious tolerance. Frederick William offered asylum to the French Huguenots with the Edict of Potsdam in 1685.
Approximately 30 percent of Berlin's residents were French by 1700, because of the immigration. Many other immigrants came from Bohemia, Poland and Salzburg.
The Margraviate of Brandenburg had been in personal union with the Duchy of Prussia since 1618. The dual state formed the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701. Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg, crowned himself as king Frederick I in Prussia.
Berlin replaced Konigsberg as the capital of the new Kingdom. This was a successful attempt to centralize the capital in the very far-flung state. It was the first time the city began to grow. It merged with 4 other cities in 1709.
Frederick II, known as Frederick the Great, came to power in 1740. Berlin became a center of the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment included a range of ideas centered on reason as the primary source of knowledge and advanced ideals such as liberty, progress, toleration, fraternity, constitutional government and separation of church and state.
French historians traditionally date the period from 1715 to 1789. It ran from the beginning of the reign of Louis XV until the French Revolution.
Berlin was occupied briefly occupied by Russia during the Seven Years War. The war was a global conflict fought between 1756 and 1763. It involved every European great power of the time and spanned five continents. It affected Europe, the Americas, West Africa, South Asia and the Philippines.
The conflict split Europe into two coalitions. One was led by the Kingdom of Great Britain. It included the Kingdom of Prussia, the Kingdom of Portugal, the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg and other small German states.
The other was led by the Kingdom of France and included the Austrian-led Holy Roman Empire, the Russian Empire (until 1762), the Kingdom of Spain and the Swedish Empire.
The Raid on Berlin took place in October 1760 when Austrian and Russian forces occupied the Prussian capital for several days. The occupiers withdrew after raising money from the city. Prussian reinforcements were on the way. The city had been occupied for 4 days.
The Romantik epoch of German philosophy and literature was described as a movement against classical and realistic theories of literature. It was a contrast to the rationality of the Age of Enlightenment.
It elevated medievalism and elements of art and narrative from the medieval period. It also emphasized folk art, nature and an epistemology based on nature. The epistemology included human activity conditioned by nature in the form of language, custom and usage.
Heidelberg became the center of the movement after the Jenna phase (1798-1804). The distance from Heidelberg to Berlin is about 480 km (300 miles). Jena was closer. It was about 220 km (135 miles).
The Heidelberg Romantics were a famous circle of poets. Joseph von Eichendorff, Johann Joseph von Görres, Ludwig Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano are listed among them.
Notable representatives of Berlin Romanticism included Friedrich Schleiermacher, Wilhelm von Humboldt and Alexander von Humboldt.
Adam Muller
Adam Muller was born in Berlin on June 30, 1779.
It was intended that he should study Protestant theology, but from 1798 he devoted himself in Göttingen to the study of law, philosophy and natural science. He was a student of the jurist Gustav Hugo. Gottingen was about 260 km (165 miles) to the south west of Berlin.
King George II of Great Britain was also Elector of Hanover. He gave his Prime Minister in Hanover, Gerlach Münchhausen, the order to establish a university in Göttingen to propagate the ideas and values associated with the European Enlightenment in 1734.
Courses were taught in the Paulinerkirche in association with the Dominican monastery or in the homes of professors. A riding hall and a fencing house were the only buildings added to the campus. No university auditorium was built until well into the 19th century.
Muller was persuaded by his friend Friedrich von Gentz (1764-1832) to take up political science when he returned to Berlin. He had formed intimacy with Gentz despite their difference in age. Gentz was 15 years older.
The connection exercised an important influence both on his material circumstances and his mental development throughout Muller's life. The two men differed widely in character and in their fundamental principles, but agreed in their practical political aims at least in their later period. The friendship was only terminated by death.
Müller worked for some time as referendary in the Kurmärkische Kammer in Berlin. His relations with the Junker party and his co-operation with them in their opposition to Hardenberg's reforms made any public employment in Prussia impossible for him.
Junker is a derivation from Jung (young) and Herr (heir). It means young nobleman. The Junker was originally one of the members of the higher edelfrei (immediate) nobility before recognition by accolade. Many Junker families only had prepositions such as von or zu before their family names without further ranks.
The term was also used in several countries in the title Kammerjunker, the German and Scandinavian equivalent of the French valet de chambre. This was a position usually given to young noble men in the service of a princely rank person at the court. A Kammerjunker was ranked below a chamberlain, but above a chamber page.
Hardenberg had been summoned to Berlin in 1797 for the accession of King Frederick William III of Prussia. He received an important position in the cabinet for Westphalia and Neuchatel.
He had struck up a friendship with Count Haugwitz in 1793. Haugwitz was the minister for foreign affairs. When he went away on leave (August–October) he appointed Hardenberg his locum tenens.
It was a critical period. Napoleon had just occupied Hanover. Haugwitz had urged upon the king the necessity for strong measures and the expediency of a Russian alliance. This was the reform for which Hardenberg was working at the time. The king stayed with the policy of neutrality which had so far seemed to have served Prussia so well.
Hardenberg contented himself with adapting himself to the royal will. The unyielding attitude of Napoleon had caused the king to make advances to Russia by the time Haugwitz returned, but the mutual declarations of the 3rd and 25th of May 1804 only pledged the two powers to take up arms in the event of a French attack upon Prussia or of further aggressions in North Germany.
Haugwitz finally resigned because he was unable to persuade the cabinet to take a more vigorous policy. Hardenberg succeeded him as foreign minister on April 14, 1804.
Muller had travelled to Sweden and Denmark in this period. He spent about two years in Poland, then went to Vienna where he converted to the Catholic faith on 30 April 1805. He became acquainted with Metternich through Gentz. He made himself useful in the preparation of state papers.
Metternich was an Austrian diplomat who was at the center of European affairs for four decades as the Austrian Empire's foreign minister from 1809 and Chancellor from 1821 until the liberal Revolutions of 1848 forced his resignation.
Hardenberg would later enact liberal reforms for the Prussian state. He has been reputed to have made improvements to the army system, abolished serfdom and feudal burdens, opened the civil service to all classes and reformed the educational system.
Muller lived at Dresden from 1806 to 1809. He was occupied with the political education of the Prince Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar. He was also a lecturer on German literature, dramatic art and political science. He edited the periodical Phoebus with Heinrich von Kleist in 1808.
He was distinguished as a writer not only on politics and economics, but on literature and aesthetics. His chief work is the Elemente der Staatskunst (Elements of Statecraft).
The series originated in lectures delivered before Prince Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar and an assembly of politicians and diplomats at Dresden in the winter, 1808-09.
There were six books in the series. The state, rights and the spirit of legislation in antiquity and in the Middle Ages were described. Money, national wealth, the economical factors of trade in the state and the relation between the state and religion were discussed.
He endeavored to comprehend the connection between political and social science. The historical method was used to base them upon philosophy and religion.
The preface to the first volume of the Elemente treated the differences between his work and Montesquieu's De l'esprit des lois. He must be reckoned among the chief opponents to revolutionary idea in politics with Edmund Burke, Friedrich von Gentz, Joseph de Maistre and Karl Ludwig von Haller.
Müller rejected the distinction between constitutional and civil law (common law) as dependent upon the idea of the state's omnipotence. His work Von der Notwendigkeit einer theologischen Grundlage der gesamten Staatswissenschaften (On the necessity of a comprehensive theological foundation for political science, 1820) was his variation of that which had been written on constitutional monarchy by Spinoza.
He was like Haller (Restauration der Staatswissenschaften, 1816) in this regard. His ideal was based on medieval feudalism. Feudalism was the foundation for the reorganization of modern political institutions. It was also the template on which the reorganization should be modeled.
He belonged to Romanticism in the field of literature and aesthetics. He was a Romanticist even in his specialty, political economy. His theory of the state was a matter of aesthetics and style. The reconciliation of science and art with the noblest ideas in political life was his stated purpose.
His position in political economy was defined by his strong opposition to Adam Smith's system of materialistic-liberal (so-called classical) political economy. The so-called industry system was criticized. He censured Smith as presenting a one-sided material and individualistic conception of society. It was too exclusively English in his view.
Müller was an adversary of free trade. It's like he was saying that the state was not omnipotent, but it was all powerful.
He emphasized the ethical element in national economy In contrast with the economical individualism of Adam Smith. The state had a duty toward the individual. Religion was also necessary in this perspective.
Müller's importance in the history of political economy is acknowledged even by the opponents of his religious and political point of view. His reaction against Adam Smith was critical of misinterpretation. Some of his ideas, freed from much of their alloy, are reproduced in the writings of the historical school of German economists.
Muller returned to Berlin in 1809, but moved to Vienna in 1811. He lived in the house of Archduke Maximilian of Austria-Este and became the friend of Clemens Maria Hofbauer.
He entered the Austrian service in 1813 and was appointed imperial commissioner and major of the rifle corps in Tyrol. He took part in the wars for liberty. He participated in the reorganization of the country later on as counselor of the government.
He became Austrian consul-general for Saxony at Leipzig and agent for Anhalt and Schwarzburg on the conclusion of peace.
He edited the periodicals Deutscher Staatsanzeiger (German State Gazette) and Unparteiischer Literatur- und Kirchenkorrespondent (Impartial Literary and Church Correspondent) between 1816-1818.
He attended the ministerial conferences at Carlsbad and Vienna (1819–1820). He took part in framing the Carlsbad resolutions as one of the principal literary instruments of the reaction.
Prince Metternich had convened the meeting of the state's representatives in Carlsbad, Bohemia after a liberal student for republic had murdered a conservative writer. Metternich was concerned that liberal and national tendencies at German universities might conduct revolutionary activities threatening the monarchistic order in the course of the European Restoration.
The Carlsbad Decrees were a set of restrictions that banned nationalist fraternities ("Burschenschaften"), removed liberal university professors and expanded the censorship of the press. They were aimed at quelling a growing sentiment for German unification for a republic. They were passed during ongoing Hep-Hep riots. The riots ended within a month after the resolution was passed.
Muller was ennobled as Ritter von Nittersdorf at the insistence of Prince von Metternich in 1826. He was recalled to Vienna (1827), appointed imperial counselor and employed in the service of the chancellery.
He died in Vienna in 1829 at the age of 49.
The feudalistic thought in Müller's writings was regarded as reactionary. It did not agree with what was right about the spirit of the times. It prevented his political ideas from exerting a more notable and lasting influence on his age. The punitive and fictive elements of the religious character prevented them from being appreciated as applicable to civil society.
His teaching was extensive for theorists of corporatism and the corporate state, but the rejection of the free market turned his work into a prelude to socialism.

Gentle kindness will be known.
The divine energy of love will be shown.
You will drink water from the spring of salvation.
Your thirst will be quenched by rehydration.
When the earth bristles from tilt,
the bramble pricks your genetic guilt,
the green thread nibbles at time
or petals fall, leaving the flower stem defined
as mined for memory in mind,
water is fluid matter
that gurgles like joyful chatter.
It has direction from grace with gravity.
It finds its way past solid valency.
It runs through all the imaginable colors
though the color is a reflection of light from others.
It takes limpid lessons from stone
to shape smoothness for the throw.
Water takes no pride in the accidents of birth.
The force from the fluid form shapes shape to adorn functional worth.
River Polished Blue Topaz
Gems become shiny when polished by pressure.
The beauty is colored for visual pleasure as treasure.
It is a pleasure that lasts within the unmeasured measure.
Cut, cleaned and polished gem
The function of oceanic power plays out in waves
on the shore with the ambition of foam laid
at the feet of the observant trade
between the material forms made.
The lines are curved as shapes in time
to reflect the function of variables in mind.
Distance and speed are often contrasted as interactive.
Movement can be measured as material satisfaction.
The speed of light is a constant
that moves so fast it's like being conscious.
Energy is everywhere present filling all things.
It enlightens mind as a kindly benefit that sings.
A note is formed from a single place
in the slender fall through the height of space.
The note floats as flake in the northern case.
Now the pitter of patter doesn't matter.
The sound of movement falls in waves of patterned spatter.
The drops that floated on the water like pearls
explode in a percussion of ruptured swirls
from sky torn liquid hurled.
Waves are laid by wind and whirl.
The worn worth of soil is barren no more.
The sweet smell of grass is tempered with grace adored as airborne.
Condensation sheds sheaves from what had been built by clouds.
The ground is pounded where serpents had slithered out of skin shed as shroud.
Heaven's fields are set as dark billowed droop drawn in falling seeds of rain.
The seeds of heaven fall on my face as a sensation bereft of pain.
Joy falls fully in a sound that echoes like that of the soft place in space
that serves as the sky's muffled floor. It is the place
that the hands of an angel trace.
The wind treads out the husks of grain torn from our tears
in the storage of harvest from the sheath of pain used to overcome fears.
Darkness runs with nothing but wild rain
on the bleak hut of solitude that turns around me like a weather vane.
The memory of the dead slain in battle or portrayed as cattle are caught aloft
in the remembrance that I will die to the sound of rain be it hard or soft.
I give thanks for having been washed cleaner than I have been
before I first believed that I could be cleansed from sin.
Blessed are the dead that the rain falls upon
with the reign of release from error drawn.
Here I pray that none whom I once have loved
is dying tonight in terror or lying still awake like a sacrificial dove.
Not alone in listening to the rain,
I hear there is sympathy for those in pain.
There is hope for relief for the helpless among the living, the dead and the insane.
It flows like cold water among broken reeds to deliver us from all that is vain.
Myriads of broken reeds stand still and stiff against the drift towards death.
Fear stands still and stiff against the end as intractably early to be met.
I had a vision as clean and clear as a pristine stream.
It was seen as the benign transcendence of any kind of dream.
The wild rain had dissolved nothing but the love of destruction for death.
The moisture in the air formed crystalline reflections of color by light lent
to form the arc of an arch for a passage through which vision for sight was meant.
This sight cut like a multi-colored blade through all the dark clouds that veil the skies
as a frown upon the transience of earthly things for human eyes.
The Light of Righteousness is revealed from behind the darkness espied.
Healing rides on the ripple of sylvan wings.
The human heart is struck by the beauty that sings
of the divine purpose for material things.
Thanks will be given for the name of the Deliverer for this deliverance.
The art of the Artisan will be praised for productive value in existence.
Divine deeds will be known among the people.
Relief will be known for salvation from evil.
The maid was paid to clean as bade.
She sang and dance to enjoy her trade.
She used a small piece of gauze to mark her place
in the rustic space of the human race.
The inhabitants of Zion will sing out with love for life.
Gratitude will be felt for the reduction of strife.
Greatness in vision will be drawn from the midst of conflict.
The seat for sight will see what is drawn to restrict
for our benefit.
Preventing legal trade is not protection.
Protecting trade routes promotes prevention.
Love for enemies requires the courage of a herder.
No one is to be killed unless it prevents the imminent physical threat of murder.
Salvation is divine.
I will trust the Savior as mine.

Isaiah 12:2-6
Surely, it is God who saves me;
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense,
and he will be my Savior.
Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing
from the springs of salvation.
And on that day you shall say,
Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;
Make his deeds known among the peoples;
see that they remember that his Name is exalted.
Sing praises of the Lord, for he has done great things,
and this is known in all the world.
Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy,
for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.

Government
The modern nation state is a movement away from government that makes decisions based on prejudice. Science is the rule for order even in religious affairs when there is a measure for public concern.
The Prussian empire was called German in a movement away from the Roman indulgence of money and status as the determinant for justice.
Roman jurisprudence allowed monetary fines as contributions to the Church in cases where a homicide was not judged to be a crime. If the killer declared that the killing was not done with malice, he could make a contribution to the church to expiate his fault in the matter.
Modern nation states allow that killing can be defined as the crime of murder even in cases where "malice" is not evident as the motive for the homicide. Killing is only allowed by law when it is done in defense against an imminent attack with lethal force.
Physics
Michelson was a physicist. Stoicism had been associated with physics from ancient times in Greece. Stoicism was against the Epicurean position of finding happiness with any level of material attainment. It supported a 'results only' oriented achievement that tolerated cruelty in punishment or violence in aggression.
Stoicism
Stoics did not oppose the notion that the victor determines the spoils. The opinion that George H. W. Bush should have taken Baghdad after the invasion of Kuwait was Stoic. It was believed that it would have been a warranted punishment for the invasion.
The US president chose to direct the military to drive the Iraqi army out of the kingdom. Economic sanctions were also imposed.
Modern scientific method has sought to establish experiment as the basis for the determination for objective judgment.
Speed of Light
Michelson established a method for testing the speed of light with the use of mirrors. Mirros were also used to rule out the existence of ether in space. He did not have a religious affiliation, but his method would have been valid as a means for testing irrespective of his belief in a religion. Math was used as a means to measure physical phenomena in physics.
Albert A. Michelson
(1852-1931)
Strzelno, Prussia
Strzelno
Strzelno is now located northeast from the center of Poland. The meaning roughly translates as ‘don’t shoot.’ The major landmarks for the location are churches. The 2005 census found a population of less than 12,500.
The establishment of the city is connected with the duke of Lesser Poland, Peter Wlast (1080-1153). He was a duke for Boleslaw III Wrymouth (1086-1138). Boleslaw was a king insofar as he was the leading duke for the area.
Boleslaw based his foreign policy on maintaining good relations with neighboring Hungary and Kievan Rus. He strengthened links with marriage and military cooperation to break dependence upon Germany and Bohemia. Victory in battle was viewed as a justification to build Churches.
Henry IV became King of the Germans in 1056. He was also called the King of the Romans and Holy Roman Emperor until his forced abdication in 1105. The authority for his reign was challenged by the Investiture Controversy with the Papacy.
This was a dispute over who had the authority to invest bishops and officials with public authority. Henry was excommunicated 5 times by 3 different popes. Civil wars took place in both Italy and Germany during his reign.
A Norbertine nuns convent was founded in the eighties of the 12th century in Strzelno. The monastery church was originally called the Church of the Holy Trinity. It is well preserved.
Norbert (1080-1134) was from Xanten near the Rhineland in Germany. He was a friend of Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153). He was influenced by the Cistercian ideal for the manner of life and the government of the order.
The Premonstratesians in the order are not monks. They are Canons Regular. Their work often involves preaching and the exercising of pastoral ministry. They frequently serve in parishes close to their abbeys or priories.
Peter Wlast was a ruler of part of Silesia in Poland. He is regarded as the founder of the Church of the Cross. Another Church was built for St. Procopius. It is a well preserved construct.
Prussia
Prussia was a part of Germany that included Poland. The House of Hohenzollern ruled Prussia for centuries. This house was characterized by respect for the defensibility of the castle built on the highest hill. The realm expanded in size by way of an unusually well-organized and effective army.
The capital was in Konigsberg until 1701. It was moved to Berlin. German states that excluded Austria united to create the German empire under Prussian leadership in 1871. The word 'German' was used to include Protestants and Catholics as Christians.
Prussians had a well organized military with respect for solid construction in castles and churches.
Albert A. Michelson
Albert Abraham Michelson was born in Strzelno on December 19, 1852. Strzelno was a province of Posen in Germany at the time. It is part of Poland currently. Albert was the son of Samuel Michelson and his wife, Rozalia. Both were of Jewish descent.
The family moved to the US in 1855 when Albert was two. He grew up in mining towns where his father worked as a merchant.
Murphy's Camp was located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. They started there, but moved to Virginia City in Nevada. His family was Jewish by birth, but non-religious. He was an agnostic. He spent his high school years in San Francisco in the home of his aunt, Henriette Levy (nee Michelson).
Albert was awarded a special appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy by President Ulysses S. Grant. He excelled in optics, heat, climatology and graphics. He graduated in 1873 and spent 2 years at sea.
He returned to the Naval Academy in 1875 to become an instructor in physics and chemistry. He moved to the Nautical Almanac Office in Washington DC in 1879. The office cataloged positions for the US Naval Observatory. It was one of the first scientific offices in the country.
He started his work with Simon Newcomb at the observatory. Newcomb had started plans for a new and precise measurement for the speed of light. It was needed as a constant to account for exact values in astronomical calculations.
He was working with Leon Foucault when he received a letter from Albert Michelson about creating an experimental basis for the measure of the constant. It was the beginning of a long collaboration and friendship.
Michelson left work with Newcomb to study in Europe in the following year. He went to the Unversities of Berlin and Heidelberg. Then he went to the College de France and Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. His first measurement was published in 1880. It was different from the on found by Newcomb. He revised his measure in 1883 to a value closer to what Newcomb established.
Michelson was fascinated with science. He knew that speed was defined as the ratio of distince in relation to time. He wanted to find a way to define the measure for the speed of light with an experiment. He conducted his first experiment while at Annapolis as part of a class demonstration in 1877.
He refined his Annapolis model. He measured the speed of light in air to be 299,864 km/sec. He estimated the speed in a vacuum to be 299,940 km/sec or 186,380 mi/sec.
He resigned from the Navy in 1881 after two years of study in Europe. He accepted a position as a professor of physics at Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, Ohio in 1883. He worked on developing an improved interferometer there.
Interferometry measured interference. Light waves could be disrupted by a mirror for example in order to extract information from the interference.
He conducted the famous Michelson-Morley experiment with Edward Morley in 1887. The experiment failed to detect evidence for the existence of the luminiferous ether. The theory that light travels in waves assumes the existence of a medium for transference through empty space.
Ether had a religious association as the undelying immaterial substance for the unity of existence. It wasn't exactly like the "God particle," but it attempted to define the divine nature as a measurable scientific entity.
If such a medium existed, it could be measured when light was deflected by a mirror at a 90 degree angle. The existence of ether was ruled out by the experiment.
He became a professor at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1889. He left to lead the department of physics at the newly organized University of Chicago in 1892.
He married Edna Stanton in 1899. They had a son and three daughters.
Albert Michelson was an American physicist known particularly for his work on the speed of light and for the Michelson-Morley experiment. His work with light helped to enlighten the public about the scientific theory about the entity as a physical phenomenon.
Freedom of religion allows for the existence of a non-religious yet law abiding portion of the public in the modern nation state. An official state religion makes the same allowance. Which is better? There would have to be a scientific measure to test for results. The collection of statistical data would be instrumental. This collection would be suspect given the influence of political influences.
Take the disappearance of the journalist Jamal Khoshiggi for example. The Washington Post claimed that he was murdered and dismembered in the Saudi consulate in Turkey. The Turkish president provided tapes that preceded the disappearance. The Saudi government arrested a number of suspects for the presumed murder.
The story provides an example of a litmus test for public prejudice in presumption. Evidence of a dismembered body was not provided as proof that the disappearance was a murder. Tapes were provided.
Implications against Saudi Arabia as a monarchy with an outdated form of justice in their legal system were made. Khoshiggi may have simply grown tired of the liberal advocacy of the Washington Post. He may have sought asylum in Saudi Arabia through their embassy in Turkey. The cover story for the event however seems to be orchestrated towards the promotion of prejudice against Islamic government.
A general trait of Islam from the western perspective is the adoption of classical literature as a basis for philosophy. This was done prior to our Renaissance and the Reformation. It became apparent in time that slavery was an attendant feature for classical culture.
The Muslims didn't allow for slavery as a characteristic of empire until the Ottomans. Both Christian and Muslim missionary efforts went global, but the naval power for Spain allowed for more aggression in expansion.
Insofar as Islam and Christianity teach an Epicurean form of philosophy regarding economic satisfaction, it was violence in aggression and cruelty in punishment that characterized the antithesis for the Epicurean trait.
There are stories about Saudi judges who have made judgments that are regressive with respect for the modern nation state, but there are also stories about American policies that have supported torture and state sponsored terrorism with the precipitation of profit from war by unnamed Congressional sources.
There is an oppositional type of relativity with respect for differences in culture, but the Muslims have parliaments that are similar to the western nations. Their executive leadership has a more conservative cost with respect for hereditary succession in monarchy or indefinite term limits for the chief elected official in republican government though.
The US government is so liberal in expenditure now that even conservatives have adopted a position where they promote liberal policy at a lesser cost.
If we want to be realistic about who is doing better, we might want to think that the US Congress and the British Parliament need to adopt more conservative measures for government expense. More conservative expense translates as more Christian or moral at this point in time.

Philip Dick was an American Science Fiction writer. He had Irish and German ancestors. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago has been dominated by the Democrat Party since some time after the election of Abraham Lincoln.
Alcohol had been prohibited in the USA by the Prohibition that lasted from the 20's to the 30's. Philip was born into this environment.
Many people disagreed with the law. The Bureau of Prohibition was part of the US Department of the Treasury. Eliot Ness, another Chicago citizen, was a lead agent who sought to enforce the national law in the city in which he had been born, raised and educated.
The Democrats in Chicago established a hierarchy in city politics that contrasted the size and seniority of the respective ethnic groups. The Daley machine was an example of the Irish dominance. It took quite a long time to develop the machine, but it was in evidence from the 1960's until it was taken over by another group.
The philosophy that Philip Dick expressed in his writing was Platonic. His characters explored freedom in relation to organization in future settings. He denied that there was a world when he started writing his fiction.
The term the "world" often refers to the reality that is created by social, business and political organization. The physical environment is part of the world, but the "reality" of human perception can be so subjective that it denies the factual functions of physical phenonmena. Human experience seeks to come to terms with freedom in relation to the reality of natural and political law.
Chicago
The name "Chicago" is derived from a French rendering of the indigenous Miami-Illinois word shikaakwa. The word identifies a wild relative of the onion. It is known to botanists as Allium tricoccum and more commonly as ramps.
The first known reference to the site of the current city of Chicago as "Checagou" was by Robert de LaSalle around 1679 in a memoir. Henri Joutel noted that the eponymous wild "garlic" grew abundantly in the area in his journal from 1688.
Chicago is the third most populous city in the United States. It had a population of 2,716,450 as of the 2017 census-estimate. The size of the population makes it the most populous city in both the state of Illinois and the Midwestern United States. It is located on the shores of Lake Michigan.
It was incorporated as a city in 1837 near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed and grew rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century. It is the largest transportation center for the northern part of the country.
Chicago is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications and transportation. It was the site of the creation of the first standardized futures contracts at the Chicago
Board of Trade.
A futures contract is more colloquially known simply as "futures." It is a standardized legal agreement to buy or sell something at a predetermined price at a specified time in the future between parties not known to each other.
Chicago has the largest and most diverse derivatives market in the world. It generates 20% of all volume in commodities and financial futures. O'Hare International Airport is the one of the busiest airports in the world. The region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and railroad freight.
The political environment in Chicago in the 1910's and 1920's let organized crime flourish to the point that there were Chicago policemen that earned more money from pay-offs than from the city. The Democrat Party in Chicago was divided along ethnic lines before the 1930's. The Irish, Polish, Italian, African and other groups each controlled politics in their neighborhoods.
There was a race riot in 1919. The riot was a major racial conflict that resulted in violence. It began in Chicago, Illinois, on July 27, 1919. It ended on August 3. Thirty-eight people died during the violence. Twenty three were black and fifteen white. Over five hundred were injured.
It is considered the worst of the approximately 25 riots during the Red Summer after World War I. The summer was so named because of the violence and fatalities across the nation. The combination of prolonged arson, looting and murder made it the worst race riot in the history of Illinois.
The sociopolitical atmosphere of Chicago was one of ethnic tension caused by competition among many new groups. Thousands of African Americans from the South had settled next to neighborhoods of European immigrants on Chicago's South Side in the Great Migration that started in 1916. They had moved to be near jobs in the stockyards and meatpacking plants.
The Irish had been established first. They fiercely defended their territory and political power against all newcomers. Post World War I tensions caused frictions between the races, especially in the competitive labor and housing markets.
Overcrowding and increased militancy by veterans contributed to the visible racial frictions. A combination of ethnic gangs and police neglect strained the racial relationships.
The turmoil came to a boil after the death of an African-American youth according to official reports. The youth had accidentally drifted into a swimming area at an unofficially segregated beach. Tensions between groups arose in a melee that blew up into days of unrest.
Chicago did not segregate most public accommodations. The city was unlike some southern cities at the time. Pre-1915 Chicago had a good reputation for equitable treatment of African Americans according to Walter Francis White of the NAACP.
Early 20th-century Chicago beaches were segregated unofficially. The competition for low-end jobs between Irish and African Americans caused tension between the groups. Lack of regard for education was a major issue.
The Black Sox scandal also took place in 1919. Eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of intentionally losing the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for money from a gambling syndicate.
Judge Landis permanently banned all eight men from professional baseball despite acquittals in a public trial. Landis was appointed the first Commisioner of Baseball.
Philip Dick
Philip Kindred Dick and his twin sister, Jane Charlotte, were born six weeks prematurely on December 16, 1928 in Chicago. They were born to Dorothy (née Kindred; 1900–1978) and Joseph Edgar Dick (1899–1985). Joseph worked for the United States Department of Agriculture. Philip's paternal grandparents were Irish.
The death of Jane came six weeks after her birth on January 26, 1929. The loss of his twin profoundly affected Philip's life. He would adopt a recurrent motif about the "phantom twin" in his books.
His family later moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. His father was transferred to Reno, Nevada when Philip was five. Dorothy refused to move. She and Joseph divorced. Both parents fought for custody of Philip. Custody was awarded to the mother.
Dorothy was determined to raise Philip alone. She took a job in Washington, D.C. and moved there with her son. Philip was enrolled at John Eaton Elementary School (1936–1938) where he completed the second through fourth grades. His lowest grade was a "C" in Written Composition. The teacher remarked that he "shows interest and ability in story telling".
Dorothy and Philip returned to California in June 1938. He was educated in Quaker schools. It was around this time that he became interested in science fiction. Dick stated that he read his first science fiction magazine, Stirring Science Stories, in 1940 at the age of 12.
Dick attended Berkeley High School in Berkeley, California. He and fellow science fiction author Ursula K. Le Guin were members of the same graduating class (1947) but did not know each other at the time.
He briefly attended the University of California, Berkeley, after graduation. He only attended from September 1949 to November 11, 1949, but was granted an honorable dismissal on January 1, 1950.
Dick did not declare a major. He took classes in history, psychology, philosophy and zoology.
His study of philosophy led him to believe that existence is based on internal human perception. The perception does not necessarily correspond to external reality. He described himself as "an acosmic panentheist." The universe existed only as an extension of God.
He read the works of Plato and pondered the possibilities of metaphysical realms. He came to the conclusion that the world is not entirely real. There is no way to confirm whether it is truly there.
This question from his early study persisted as a theme in many of his novels. Dick dropped out because of ongoing anxiety problems according to his third wife Anne's memoir. She also says he disliked the mandatory ROTC training at Berkeley.
Philip K. Dick was an American writer known for his work in science fiction. His work explored philosophical, social and political themes with stories dominated by monopolistic corporations, alternative universes, authoritarian governments and altered states of consciousness.
His writing reflected his interest in metaphysics and theology. He often drew upon his experience of life in addressing the nature of reality, identity, drug abuse, schizophrenia and transcendental experiences.
He began publishing science fiction stories in the 1950's. His stories initially found little commercial success. His 1962 alternative history novel The Man in the High Castle earned Dick early acclaim.
He received a Hugo Award for Best Novel. He followed with science fiction novels such as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968) and Ubik (1969).
His 1974 novel Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best novel. Dick's work engaged more explicitly with issues of theology, philosophy and the nature of reality following a series of religious experiences in February 1974. Novels such as A Scanner Darkly (1977) and VALIS (1981) were published.
A collection of his non-fiction writing on these themes was published posthumously as The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick (2011). He died at age 53 in 1982 due to complications from a stroke.
Dick's writing produced 44 published novels and approximately 121 short stories. Most of his work appeared in science fiction magazines during his lifetime.
A variety of popular films based on Dick's works have been produced. Blade Runner (1982), Total Recall (1990 and 2012), Minority Report (2002), A Scanner Darkly (2006), The Adjustment Bureau (2011) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017) were adapted from his novels.
Time named Ubik one of the hundred greatest English-language novels published since 1923 in 2005. Dick became the first science fiction writer to be included in The Library of America series in 2007.

Hamamatsu
Hamamatsu is located in western Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
The Shijimizuka site shell mound and the Akamonue Kofun ancient tomb show that the city has been settled since prehistoric times.
Hamamatsu is a coastal city located 260 kilometres (160 mi) southwest of Tokyo.
The foundation for the location consists of a flat plain and the Mikatahara Plateau in the south and a mountainous area in the north. It is roughly bordered by Lake Hamana to the west, the Tenryū River to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the south.
There is a climatic difference within the same city. Southern Hamamatsu has a humid subtropical climate with cool to mild winters with little snowfall. It is windy in winter because of the dry monsoon called Enshū no Karakaze. This wind is unique to the region.
The climate in northern Hamamatsu is harsher because of foehn winds. These winds come down off the mountain range. Summer is hot. The highest temperature often exceeds 35 degrees C in the Tenryu-ku area. This part of the city has snow in winter.

When June dances over the death of May
the sweet sound of thrush ushers in her day.
All nature seems to work, play or sing.
The bees are stirring. Birds are on the wing.
Summer claims the open air.
The light is the voice for any fair.
The wind blows cool to calm the heat.
People find ways to stay off the street.
The bee dances from flower to flower
to drink the golden glow of particulate power.
He probes each flower to search for sweetness.
The pollen goes home to the comb to make honey with discreteness.
Peonies without pistils are just too simple.
Nectar and pollen are more than a symbol.
Farming this fragrance is the bee's prophetic Sibyl.
She foretells honey as the product for each cell's thimble.
The comb is a home
to many a drone.
This model of society is a recognized monarchy.
The natural government has a strong hierarchy.
The hierarchy frames the strength for the society.
There is order, stability and interest for production.
The utility of purpose acts as a reduction.
The reduction of wasted time and effort is the result.
The production of a tasteful product reduces tumult.
The spirit of Swammerdam wears the smile of productivity.
His research on insects showed proclivity for industry.
He had proved that the 'king' was a queen.
He used a microscope to see what needed to be seen.
The monarch had been named "king" from ancient times.
The visual detection of eggs in ovaries proved otherwise.
The sweetness of varying colors comes from the legs of drones.
It contains delight as a sign for those who reflect on their own.
The sweet radiance that is beyond all measure
is condensed in honey as the treasure.
Luminosity is formed as viscous grace.
Wisdom produces this grace with taste
in the colony's comb as the place
to make haste without waste.
I am the sole unbusy thing.
My watching doesn't make honey, build or sing.
The hive is the super-organism.
The community is a form of swarming formalism
Observers open the chambers hunting for the queen.
Is she eating honey, laying eggs or avoiding being seen?
She is old and not too bold.
She must live to make another fold.
The new virgins dwell
over their hexagonal cells.
A curtain of wax divides them from the bridal flight.
The barrenness of the virgin ends when the drone who fights
the swarm to make her pregnant in flight dies.
He falls from the sky.
She calls the swarm to follow her sighs.
Flight sings praise to the Giver of life.
The buzz hums gratitude to deliverance from strife.
Love fulfilled is chance imbibed.
The dance circumscribed
is the eternal flow of time in the hive.
Darkness is welcome even without rain.
The clouds spell relief from the heat as a pain.
The earth waits with patience for the golden guest of ray.
The brilliance is released to sing of angelic play.
This voice of gold has called me out there,
outside the window to receive the soft stare.
The uncontested summer played plainly in the air.
Your love looked as simple as that purest of pears
that you picked for me with the greatest of care.
The pearskin’s fleck and trace
was as smooth as any human grace.
It gave the power to break the attack
that held us back from what we lack.
That barrier that held us back
was best known to our zodiac
as the curse of the megalomaniac.
The “fear” most of us defined
was a product of the mind.
Those who conquered this great foe
weren't called heroes.
The feeling was brave
for it seemed unafraid.
The fear was not ejected.
It was actually extended
that courage could be defended.
Corporations probed households to increase their prices.
The prices shrieked MORE despite the height of their highness.
The veil of light in day hid the sky seen at night.
The memory of the hive was inscribed in the night by mind.
Industry sat in the shell of defense.
We built benefit to protect ourselves from menace.
The world was all that was the case.
The Dutch republic decided to give monarchy chase.
The seventeenth century was the frame.
The slave trade became the insane part of the game.
Otherwise, Dutch art became world reknowned.
It celebrated life as it was found.
Sea travel became more frequent.
The ships increased risk with the increase in sequence.
Large waves due to storms had a regularity in their swell.
The up and down was large, but it was manageable.
The rouge wave that had been thought to have been a fiction
was met more often in the sailor predilection for prediction.
The ocean south of Africa's Cape of Good Hope
was likely to make the seasoned sailor feel like a dope.
The rouge wave was formed by different factors.
They came together when it was wished that it hadn't mattered.
Crosswinds can push the water waves into a higher swell
when they converge in diagonals in the currents that propel.
Ocean currents can also create a rouge.
When waves conjoin, it increases the size of the flow.
The result can be a monster twice the size of normal.
This wave can break your boat as if it were paranormal.
I heard the unfamiliar voice say,
"I eased his burden along the way."
I answered you from the secret place of thunder.
You were rescued when you thought you had made a fatal blunder.
The bitter bite of storm
had threatened to take you from your normal forms.
The calm waters appeared to be made from luck
after the storm had tossed the ship around like a rubber duck
in a tub of foamy bubbles to remove your nasty funk.
Moxibusted mugwort was worth more than gold
when the sailor felt that his body had been told
that it had been mugged, drugged, thugged and rolled.
We confront death while we live
that salvation may be that which gives
us life as the win.
It is energy for the body
that makes it feel alive or godly.
Time for rest is given as a form of freedom
that the body may be forgiven for being driven as needed
in season with or without reason.
Beauty is a state of mind in elegance
that is refined with the practice of intelligence.
Cool black night had crept in through the forest.
The shadows shrunk as the darkness became enormous.
The moon approached Mars at about eleven.
The waning gibbous illumined earth from the darkness of heaven.
A mockingbird chased a squirrel with the confidence of flight.
The squirrel had to scramble as the bird left sight.
The shy moon cast light between the stones upon the river.
The river of stars reached across forever to cause a shiver.
The artist pulled back to look at the canvas.
Certain strokes needed more art as exacted by practice.
The musician cast a wary eye out the window.
The rest was a pest that wanted to be known as wind blown.
The ravine was parched by the heat of the day.
The porch held some souls without much to say.
The black leather jackets were open all the way.
Whatever the color, the wooden house looked grey.
The hi-fi made "Angels Never Die" echo through the trees.
The memory of the highway played along with the breeze.
The Harley hog road by fields, gardens and towns.
Nomadic soul drowned amidst the domestic sounds.
The starving black angel hid in human disguise
with dimensionless being by American design.
A solemn charge was laid upon our gift
as we had come from the land of misery for this.
We are born to suffer
the power of the other.
Sit down and breathe
the breath that you need.
The breath relaxes tension
with attention for descension.
Work like the sun.
See what you've done.
Don't take poison to see if the antidote works.
If it doesn't, your body will suffer pain or worse.
Realize birth in the boundless moment.
The light is delight in what power has chosen.
The celestial entourage shines in paradise.
The divine device resides inside your surprise.
Shine in your heaven.
The news is on at seven.
Give the past its place.
The present shapes your face.
The future will meet you further in space
with a place for you in grace.
Forget the flash in which you exist.
The world is your map should you persist.
If there was a time when you had to resist,
it went by like a gift without a twist.
You are the other already.
You took the chevy to the levy.
It may sound heavy,
but eternity is steady.
It's a lasting paradigm.
You are the heavy in eternal time.
Become one with your story. Revel with your rhyme.
Tell us who you are with every step.
We vanish inevitably, only when inept.
You remain in the experience you have kept.
You were shaped by dreams as you slept.
The shadow of the dome of pleasure
drifts past with the mingled measure.
I don't know how to pray to make pain pass.
I know how to fall down on my knees in the soft grass
to press the earth with my temple sideways cast.
It is a miracle of rare device.
My heart becomes warm where there had been ice.
What do you plan to do with your wild and precious life?
Sing with joy as your strength.
Let the divine experience of being human guide you at length.
81 Exultate Deo
1 Sing with joy to God our strength *
and raise a loud shout to the God of Jacob.
2 Raise a song and sound the timbrel, *
the merry harp, and the lyre.
3 Blow the ram's-horn at the new moon, *
and at the full moon, the day of our feast.
4 For this is a statute for Israel, *
a law of the God of Jacob.
5 He laid it as a solemn charge upon Joseph, *
when he came out of the land of Egypt.
6 I heard an unfamiliar voice saying, *
"I eased his shoulder from the burden;
his hands were set free from bearing the load."
7 You called on me in trouble, and I saved you; *
I answered you from the secret place of thunder
and tested you at the waters of Meribah.
8 Hear, O my people, and I will admonish you: *
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
9 There shall be no strange god among you; *
you shall not worship a foreign god.
10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt and said, *
"Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it."
11 And yet my people did not hear my voice, *
and Israel would not obey me.
12 So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their hearts, *
to follow their own devices.
13 Oh, that my people would listen to me! *
that Israel would walk in my ways!
14 I should soon subdue their enemies *
and turn my hand against their foes.
15 Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him, *
and their punishment would last for ever.
16 But Israel would I feed with the finest wheat *

Rogue waves most likely happen when a perfect storm of factors—especially wind and ocean currents—combine at just the right moment to form an incredibly large wave. A rogue is more than twice the height of a regular wave for the area.
"Rouge Giants at Sea"
NY Times: Science
"The storm was nothing special. Its waves rocked the Norwegian Dawn just enough so that bartenders on the cruise ship turned to the usual palliative — free drinks.
"Then, off the coast of Georgia, early on Saturday, April 16, 2005, a giant, seven-story wave appeared out of nowhere. It crashed into the bow, sent deck chairs flying, smashed windows, raced as high as the 10th deck, flooded 62 cabins, injured 4 passengers and sowed widespread fear and panic.
"“The ship was like a cork in a bathtub,” recalled Celestine Mcelhatton, a passenger who, along with 2,000 others, eventually made it back to Pier 88 on the Hudson River in Manhattan.
Rogue waves can be found where wave fields from different wind systems meet. This occurs mostly in wide mid-latitude ocean basins that are frequently exposed to strong winds.
Rogue waves are not tsunamis, which are generated by subsea earthquakes.
“Rogue waves are a result of different swell interfering constructively, that is two wave fields combining such that two wave crests add up to produce a much taller wave. Another way they are caused is the interaction of waves with surface currents,” Stössel explains.
“Strong currents, such as the Gulf Stream, often feature small-scale jets around which wave crests tend to bend (refract) and converge, thus creating taller waves. Therefore, regions affected by strong currents, such as the Gulf Stream, are more prone to rogue waves. Another example is the Agulhas Current that runs southwestward around South Africa, where it meets tall waves that are generated by the prevalent westerlies in this region.”
Re-birth of Republic
After the 30 years war with Habsburg Spain
The Dutch West Indies company was granted a charter for a trade monopoly in the Dutch West Indies by the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands on June 3, 1621. They were given jurisdiction over Dutch participation in the Atlantic slave trade, Brazil, the Caribbean and North America to compete with the Spanish Habsburgs.
The area where the company could operate consisted of West Africa between the Tropic of Cancer, the Cape of Good Hope and the Americas. The jurisdiction included the Pacific Ocean and the eastern part of New Guinea. The intended purpose of the charter was to eliminate competition with the Spanish or Portuguese trading posts established by the merchants. The company became instrumental in the largely ephemeral Dutch colonization of the Americas in the 17th century. This included New Netherland and New Amsterdam.
Dutch trade, travel, business, science and art were among the most acclaimed in the world.
Dutch Industry was inspired by the research into insects by Swammerdam.
Swammerdam was convinced that the creation or generation of all creatures obeyed the same laws. Having studied the reproductive organs of men and women at university he set out to study the generation of insects. He had devoted himself to studying insects after discovering that the king bee was indeed a queen. He knew this because he had found eggs inside the creature. He did not publish this finding.
Swammerdam was visited by Cosimo II de' Medici in 1669 and showed him another revolutionary discovery. The limbs and wings of the butterfly could be seen inside a caterpillar.
When "The General History of Insects," or "General Treatise on little Bloodless Animals" was published later that year, he not only did away with the idea that insects lacked internal anatomy, but also he refuted the notion that insects originated from spontaneous generation.
He asserted that their life cycle was a metamorphosis. He maintained that all insects originated from eggs and their limbs grew and developed slowly. He declared war on "vulgar errors." The symbolic interpretation of insects was incompatible with the power of God in his mind.
Swammerdam therefore dispelled the seventeenth-century notion that different life stages of an insect (e.g. caterpillar and butterfly) represent a sudden change from one type of animal to another. The same organism was transformed through different stages.
The first visual proof that his predecessors had mistakenly identified the queen bee as male was published in Biblia Naturae. He also provided evidence that the queen bee is the sole mother of the colony. He had engaged in five intense years of beekeeping. He had found that drones were masculine and had no stinger.
Swammerdam identified the worker bees as "natural eunuchs." He was unable to detect ovaries in them, but described them as nearer to the nature of the female. He had produced a drawing of the queen bee's reproductive organs, as observed through the microscope. It had been asserted that the queen bee was male and ruled the hive since ancient times.

Brothel scenes are a familiar type of seventeenth-century Dutch genre painting. Their popularity poses questions. Who bought these pictures? Prostitution, procuring and adultery were criminal offenses. The word hoererij (whoredom) denoted any kind of nonmarital sexual intercourse. Religious piety was deeply felt not only by Calvinists but by people of other denominations. A market existed for pictures of half-nude women whose charms were for sale in this political climate. The definition of human nature as totally depraved carried some unpredicted side effects with respect for artistry.

"I eased his shoulder from the burden;
his hands were set free from bearing the load."
16 But Israel would I feed with the finest wheat *
and satisfy him with honey from the rock.
