The Copernican Theorem
The planets orbit the sun.

Nicolaus Copernicus
b.19 February 1473, Torun, Poland, Prussian Confederation
d 24 May 1543, Frombork, Poland, Prussia

Copernicus was a Renaissance mathematician and astronomer. His work in astronomy was mathematical and academic.

He looked at the theory of Ptolemy as an example of what had been believed about the planets in the field of study prior to his time.

Claudius Ptolemy (100-170 CE)

Ptolemy was a Greco-Roman mathematician and astronomer from the second century. He lived in Alexandria, Egypt. Alexandria had been established by Alexander the Great in the fourth century BCE as a center for culture. It had a library that housed many scrolls.
Ptolemy thought that the planets and the sun orbited the earth.

He wrote in the Almagest:

“The solid body of the earth is reasonably considered as being the largest relative to those moving against it and as remaining unmoved in any direction by the force of the very small weights, and as it were absorbing their fall.”

This statement is based on direct observation. When you look at the night sky, the moon, the planets and the stars look small in comparison to the ground on which you stand.

The sun looks like an object that is smaller than earth. It appears to move across the sky. These observations give the impression that the earth is the center of the universe.

There are retrograde movements of the planets in the night sky though. A planet moves in one direction, then turns back. Then it turns back again and heads back in the direction that it had been headed. This retrograde movement is contrary to the reasonable expectation that an orbit around the earth would provide.

This was an important concern in navigation. Ships were dependent upon the knowledge of stars for navigation. The retrograde motion made a difference, but how significant was it? If knowledge got you where you needed to be most of the time, it seemed like it was enough.

What difference would it make if the sun was the center for the planetary system? Error in navigation at sea could prove to be fatal. If the planets orbit the sun instead of the earth, there is a great deal of difference in the conception of how things are based on how they work.

The 16th century is regarded by historians as the time in which the rise of the West occurred. The western world had been united by the papal leadership of the kings in Europe.

Rome had ceased to exist as the capital for Republican empire, but the pope had called for the crusades as a means to unite the kings of the west against the threat of invasion from Islam as the newer religious power.

The papacy had become a more Republican form of leadership with respect for election. His leadership presented a dilemma for all the monarchies insofar as they operated with hereditary succession.

France, Spain, Portugal, Germany and England had been competing for power with respect for leadership in Roman Catholic Christendom. The pope was elected by the college of cardinals to serve as the leader for the Church for the duration of his time in office.

The pope replaced the hereditary succession of the emperor in Rome in this way. He had been acting as the emperor in practical terms. He blessed the king of kings as well as the kings for their office.

Spain and Portugal became leading powers in the 16th century in the competition for trade routes with Islam. Muslim trade was mostly inland. The Spanish and the Portuguese had developed knowledge regarding navigation and ship building that enabled them to travel long distances at sea. They had military power.

They were willing to subjugate native people to take their gold, put them in slavery or take their land for the natural resources. They were looking to maintain independence from Islamic dominance.

The conquistadors acted as though they were on a friendly mission in order to get information and win trust. They were simply looking for a reason to find the natives in foreign places as representatives of polytheistic regression. The rest was motivated by the effort to avoid domination by Muslim aggression for monotheism.

The Iberians explored the world’s seas and opened world-wide oceanic trade routes. Large parts of the world became Spanish and Portuguese colonies. While the Portuguese became masters of African, Indian and Asian trade routes, the Spanish opened trade across the Atlantic and the Pacific to link the Americas with Asia.

Continental European powers were concerned with the success of the Spanish and the Portuguese. The Reformation gave a major blow to the authority of the papacy and the Roman Catholic Church. European politics came to be dominated by religious conflict.

The groundwork for the epochal Thirty Years’ War between the Spanish Habsburgs and the Dutch Republic was laid towards the end of the century. Protestant power was looking to secularize the state to avoid subjugation to any single Catholic kingdom. Science had become the battle-ground for objective secular knowledge.

The Ottoman empire continued to expand in the Middle East. The Ottomans engaged in battle with the border kingdoms for western power. They were mostly working to dominate inland entities, but they had conquered territory in Spain and Italy.

The Sultan took the title of Caliph. He was also fighting battles with the Safavid dynasty of Persia. Iran and Iraq were caught in the struggle for popularity from a once obscure Shiite sect of warrior mystics. Persia was working for independence from the majority Sunni Muslim world.

Nicolaus Copernicus

Copernicus was born and died in Royal Prussia. Prussia was a region that had been a part of the Kingdom of Poland since 1466.

He was a polyglot and polymath scholar. He obtained a doctorate in canon law. He also practiced as a physician, classics scholar, translator, governor, diplomat and economist.

He was a third order Dominican like the rest of his family. He derived a quantity theory for money as a key concept for economics in 1517. He formulated a version of what later became known as Gresham’s law in 1519. Astronomy was a hobby.

Torun, Poland
Thorn = Torun

Torun is a city in northern-central Poland on the Vistula River. The city is renowned for the Museum of Gingerbread. The baking tradition dates back nearly a millennium. It has a large Cathedral along with other brick and stone constructs. There are those who believe it to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

The Teutonic Knights crossed the river Vistula at the height of land at the city of Nessau and established a fortress in spring 1231. Hermann von Salza and Hermann Balk signed the foundation charters for Thorn and Kulm on 28 December 1233. The original document was lost in 1244. The set of rights in general is known as Kulm law.

The settlement was relocated to the present site of the Old Town in 1236 due to frequent floods. Franciscan friars settled in the city in 1236. Dominicans followed in 1239. The adjacent New Town was founded predominantly to house Torun's growing population of craftsmen and artisans in 1264.

When the city joined the mercantile Hanseatic League it became an important medieval trade center in 1280.

The First Peace of Thorn ended the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War. The treaty was signed in the city in February 1411 leaving the town in the hands of the Order. The gentry of Thorn formed the Prussian Confederation to further oppose the Knights' policies in 1440.

The Confederation rose against the Monastic state of the Teutonic Knights in 1454. A confederate delegation submitted a petition to Polish King Casimir IV Jagiellon. The petition asked him to regain power over Prussia as the rightful ruler. An act of incorporation was signed in Kraków (6 March 1454), recognizing the region, including Toruń, as part of the Polish Kingdom.

These events led to the Thirteen Years' War. The New and the Old Towns amalgamated in 1454. The citizens of Thorn conquered the Teutonic castle. The fortifications were dismantled brick by brick except for the Gdanisko tower.

The tower was used until the 18th century for gunpowder storage. Toruń financially supported the Polish Army during the war. The Thirteen Years' War ended in 1466 with the Second Peace of Thorn. The Teutonic Order ceded their control over the city to Poland.

Prussia was bordered by the Baltic Sea. It was not actively engaged in the competition for the domination of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans with Portugal and Spain. Navigation had global importance nonetheless. The truth of science was also being used as a justification for the secularization of the state.

Nicolaus Copernicus was born on February 19, 1473. He was named after his father. He was the last of four children born into a merchant family. Torun was located about 250 miles to the north of the Polish capital, Krakow.

The city flourished due to its location on the only major waterway winding through the center of the Kingdom of Poland. The location was a factor in his father's solid sales of copper in Danzig (modern Gdansk).

Much of the responsibility for raising the young Copernicus fell on his uncle, Lucas Watzenrode the Younger. The uncle took the boy under his wing after the senior Nicolaus’ death. Watzenrode was a well-educated graduate of the University of Krakow.

He saw to it Nicolaus was exposed to some of the best teachers in Poland. When ready, the student entered his uncle’s alma mater in pursuit of a mathematics degree. This was a course of study which would inevitably tie into astronomy due to the close relationship between the two fields at the university.

The discipline of astronomy in his day was less scientific than what is understood today. Working telescopes were still more than 130 years from being invented. Learning about the movement of the stars would be based on observation, but it was influenced largely by theory and philosophy.

The works of ancient Greeks like Aristotle, Ptolemy and Euclid as well as those of Muslim scholars from the Middle Ages were the primary sources for his education. He would analyze his observations from these sometimes contradictory ideas and formulate his own concepts for how the universe worked.

Watzenrode called his nephew to join him in Warmia in 1495. The uncle had recently received the title of Prince-Bishop. This gave him governing responsibility in addition to his role as head of the Church.

Watzenrode pushed for Copernicus to receive an appointment as a low-level priest with administrative responsibilities. The move initially failed. The Prince-Bishop sent Copernicus and his brother to Italy for an education in law. They entered the Bologna University of Jurists in January 1497.

Nicolaus received the position his uncle intended for him within months. He served as the local canon in absentia while he completed his degree.

A chance encounter with Domenico Maria Novara da Ferrara, professor of astronomy at the University of Bologna, gave Copernicus access to one of the foremost minds in the field during his day. The two developed a great working relationship. Copernicus later credited Ferrara for witnessing his first astronomical observation.

He returned to Warmia briefly in 1501, then headed back to Italy for entrance in a medical college at the University of Padua. Copernicus managed to earn his law degree and keep in touch with Ferrara in the midst of his studies of anatomy and human ailments.

He became fluent in Latin and achieved a passing understanding of Greek and Italian. He already spoke Polish and German. Copernicus settled in Warmia once again with his two year appointment complete. This time he served as his uncle’s assistant and personal physician in 1503.

Copernicus traveled all over Poland as part of his uncle’s entourage until Watzenrode died in 1512. He continued to make notes on lunar eclipses and thinking through his own ideas about the nature of the universe.

He felt comfortable enough the sun was the center point of the solar system instead of the earth to publish a short description of the theory (heliocentrism) by 1514. This “Commentariolus,” literally a “little commentary” in Latin, amounted to the basics of his hypothesis. It was printed in a small run as a gift for close friends so far as historians can tell.

Copernicus continued in his role as an adviser to the leadership of Warmia over the next 20 years. He also advised the Royal Prussian Diet after the Polish-Teutonic War ended in 1521. He focused primarily on economics. Rough ideas related to the use of currency were conceived that would later be proven by other theorists, particularly Thomas Gresham.

He used his free time to tinker with astronomy. The mathematical underpinnings for his concept of heliocentrism were derived with this time.

Planetary Orbits

“De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelstium” was the major work for Copernicus in astronomy. The title translates as “On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres.” The work was finished by 1530.

The central theory was the Earth rotates daily on its axis. It revolves yearly around the sun. The other planets also orbit the sun. This challenged the long held view that the earth was stationary at the center of the universe. This view believed that the planets, stars, sun and moon revolve around the center.

He wrote, "All the spheres revolve about the sun as their midpoint, and therefore the sun is the center of the universe...." [solar system]

Copernicus adapted physics to the demands of astronomy. He believed that the primary principle of observation for Ptolemy’s system was incorrect. This error forced the mathematics to describe the retrograde motion of planets in a way that supported the original error in principle.

Copernicus was the first person to integrate a system that combined mathematics, physics and cosmology in a way that describes the planetary system as it functions, not based on error in the perception of appearance.

This thesis had a major impact on political theory. If the earth is not the center of the planetary system, then no one has the right to declare that everyone else revolves around him or her. It follows that no one is the center of the universe.

This position was used to promote the secularization of the state. The church in the Protestant reformation was a politically monarchical entity. The papacy's claim to supreme authority was diminished by the process.

His treatise on the planetary system was published in 1543. He died on the 24th of May in the same year. The publication is considered to be a major event in the history of science. It triggered the Copernican revolution and made a major contribution to science.

His work affirmed that there is a measure for what is and is not human in nature. Measure gives the qualities defined by science significance in relation to size and importance.

Martin Luther had reportedly nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle church in 1517. The first Act of Royal Supremacy was passed by parliament in England on November 3, 1534. John Calvin's "Institutes of the Christian Religion" was published in 1536. The Protestant Reformation had become a state sponsored institution.

Copernicus had been an authority in Canon Law for the Church. He was a third order Dominican, but he was also a citizen of the state. The duchy of Prussia had been secularized by the Teutonic Order in 1525 as part of the Protestant reformation. Albert, the Duke of Prussia, was the Grand Master for the Teutonic Knights.

Copernicus' epoch making treatise had only caused mild controversy at the original publication. There were no fierce sermons about contradicting Holy Scripture. It was three years after the publication that a Dominican by the name of Giovanni Maria Tolosani denounced the work.

The theory was renounced in an appendix to a work defending the truth of Scripture in 1546. Tolosani noted that Bartolomeo Spina, the Master of the Sacred Palace, had planned to condemn "de Revolutionibus," but had been prevented from doing so by illness and death. The Master of the Sacred Palace was the chief censor for the Catholic Church.

Tolosani had written his treatise to reform the calendar. Astronomy would play a large role in the revision. He had attended the Fifth Lateran Council.

Fifth Lateran Council
1512-1517

The council had been convened by Pope Julius II from 1512 to 1517 to meet in Rome to decide issues regarding relations between France, the Papal States and the Spanish empire.

The excommunication of a number of cardinals from Pisa by the pope was upheld. These cardinals were supported by Louis XII of France.  The statements from the council of Pisa (1409) were rejected.

A statement declared that local bishops must give their permission before the printing of a new book. A call to reclaim the 'holy lands' in the Middle East was reissued against the Turks.

A statement regarding the immortality of the soul was made. This statement concerned what it was to be rational according to the healing mission of the church.

Presence of Zeus

Ptolemy had made a statement about being mortal, but his tracing of the celestial bodies put him in the presence of divinity. It gave him participation in immortality.

His placement of the earth at the center of the universe was held over the helio-centric theory of Copernicus by virtue of belief in the immortality of the soul.

Astronomical calculations regarding epicycles and eccentrics were seen as mere mathematical devices to adjust calculations of where the heavenly bodies would appear. They weren't an explanation of the cause of those motions.

Even Copernicus still maintained the idea of perfectly circular orbits. He relied on epicycles. This "saving the phenomena" was seen as proof that astronomy and mathematics could not be taken as serious means to determine physical causes.

Tolosani invoked this view in his final critique of Copernicus. He said that his biggest error was that he had started with "inferior" fields of science to make pronouncements about "superior" disciplines.

Copernicus had used mathematics and astronomy to postulate about physics and cosmology.

He had not started with the accepted principles of physics and cosmology to determine things about astronomy and mathematics. He seemed to be undermining the whole system of the philosophy of science at the time.

The Catholic Church didn't take any official action against Copernicus' work until six decades after it was published. The Congregation of the Index issued a decree that suspended the treatise until it could be "corrected." The doctrine that the earth moves and the sun does not was deemed to be "false and altogether opposed to Holy Scripture."

The same decree also prohibited any work that defended the mobility of the earth or the immobility of the sun. Any attempt to reconcile these assertions with Scripture was denied.

The corrections to "De Revolutionibus" omitted or altered nine sentences. These corrections were issued in 1620. This was four years after the original decree. The censorship wasn't lifted until 1835.

The helio-centric view of the planetary system is now believed to be correct. The orbits of the planets are ellipitical as opposed to perfectly circular. Circularity had been used as a symbolic promise for the immortality for the soul. The soul was symbolically represented by a circle or a sphere.

There had been a time when the earth and the planets were believed to be discs rather than spheres. The planets and the sun were circular disks that moved around the earth as the central circle.

The planetary model is scientifically significant insofar as it is part of reality as it is. Knowledge is regarded as common ground for people who believe in God and those who do not.

The Egyptians had been the first to establish belief in resurrection. The resurrection cycle carried important implications regarding past precedence as the basis for making determinations for policy. The policy was mainly legal with respect for political, social and personal aspects.

The resurrection of Christ gives Christian monotheism a basis for the consideration of the relation of religious belief to the world. While scripture has documented that Jesus said that his kingdom is not of this world, the descent of the kingdom into the world has been presented in the book of Revelations.

The life of the soul is evident in reflections regarding the importance of statements on policy made in history. The Church has declared apostolic rule as a perpetuation of eternal life.

Changes made to the association of punishment with crime as opposed to law have indicated progress with respect to the documentation of justice in a society that can't be forced to accept the rule of one religion. Alcuin told Charlemagne that people must be allowed to choose faith. Baptism had to be voluntary, not forced.

Christianity has been the predominant religion in the west, but it maintains roots in Judaism. It was designed to be the monotheistic form for the transformation of the Roman republic into something that recognizes the importance of commerce as incentive for social interaction, has a political structure that reflects the social contract between the people and the government and makes legal provision for defense from attack.

Respect for borders is a matter of critical importance in this formulation.

Islam was the product of the need for a monotheistic religion that allowed for the development or the integration of tribal or nomadic society into the civilized state.

Rome lacked respect for borders in the promotion of insurrection or invasion as determinants in foreign policy. They also lacked a means to incorporate non-Romans into the society.

Tribal or nomadic society lacks the same respect in a more primitive way. The primitive condition keeps them closer to the potential to use arms for rebellion or participation in war.

Bishop Selwyn's model for the use of the Church of England as an integrated model for social interaction in New Zealand addressed the essential elements for development with language and incorporation.

The Maori natives were given the opportunity to learn English. English speakers were given the option to learn the native language. Natives were invited to join the Church  to participate in the government by election or appointment.

This model gives an example of essential education for the development of civilized interaction between settled and primtive cultures. The promotion of good news is the incentive to get people to work together for corporate goals with respect for common law.

let me recite what I have fashioned for the king; *
my tongue shall be the pen of a skilled writer.
2 You are the fairest of men; *
grace flows from your lips,
because God has blessed you for ever.
3 Strap your sword upon your thigh, O mighty warrior, *
in your pride and in your majesty.
4 Ride out and conquer in the cause of truth *
and for the sake of justice.
5 Your right hand will show you marvelous things; *
your arrows are very sharp, O mighty warrior.
6 The peoples are falling at your feet, *
and the king's enemies are losing heart.
7 Your throne, O God, endures for ever and ever, *
a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom;
you love righteousness and hate iniquity.
8 Therefore God, your God, has anointed you *
with the oil of gladness above your fellows.
9 All your garments are fragrant with myrrh, aloes, and cassia, *
and the music of strings from ivory palaces makes you glad.
10 Kings' daughters stand among the ladies of the court; *
on your right hand is the queen,
adorned with the gold of Ophir.
11 "Hear, O daughter; consider and listen closely; *
forget your people and your father's house.
12 The king will have pleasure in your beauty; *
he is your master; therefore do him honor.
13 The people of Tyre are here with a gift; *
the rich among the people seek your favor."
14 All glorious is the princess as she enters; *
her gown is cloth-of-gold.
15 In embroidered apparel she is brought to the king; *
after her the bridesmaids follow in procession.
16 With joy and gladness they are brought, *
and enter into the palace of the king.
17 "In place of fathers, O king, you shall have sons; *
you shall make them princes over all the earth.
18 I will make your name to be remembered
from one generation to another; *
therefore nations will praise you for ever and ever."

Song of Solomon 2:13
The fig tree puts forth its figs.
The vines are in blossom.
They give forth fragrance.
Arise my love, my fair one,
and come away.

James 1:22
Be doers of the word, not merely hearers who deceive themselves.

Mark 7:23
Evil intentions come from within the human heart: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. Evil things come from within and defile a person.

Atlanta is the capital and the most populous city in Georgia. It was founded as the transportation hub at the intersection of two railroad lines in 1837. It was burnt to ashes in the Civil War. It was rebuilt to act as the center of commerce and the unofficial capital for the "New South." It experienced unprecedented growth during the first decades of the 20th century.

The population tripled as the city limits expanded to include nearby streetcar suburbs. A skyline emerged with the construction of the Equitable, Flatiron, Empire and Candler buildings. Sweet Auburn emerged as a center of black commerce.

Leo Frank, a Jewish-American factory superintendent, was convicted of the murder of a 13 year old girl in 1913. The trial was highly publicized trial. It was seen as having been tainted by anti-Semitism. He was hanged in Marietta by a lynch mob in 1915 after his death sentence had been commuted. It was an event which deeply impacted the Jewish community in Atlanta and across the country.

The Great Atlanta Fire destroyed 1,938 buildings on May 21, 1917. The fire broke out in what is now the Old Fourth Ward. It resulted in one fatality and the displacement of 10,000 people.
Stanley Cavell was born to a Jewish family in Atlanta, Georgia. His mother was a locally renowned pianist. She trained him in music from his earliest days. His father was a businessman.

Cavell’s parents moved several times between Atlanta and Sacramento, California during the depression . Cavell played lead alto saxophone as the youngest member of a black jazz band in Sacramento as an adolescent. He majored in music at the University of California, Berkeley. He studied with Bob Thompson (musician), Roger Sessions and Ernest Bloch among others. He studied composition at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City after graduation. He discovered that music was not his calling.

He studied philosophy in graduate school at UCLA. He transferred to Harvard University. He came under the influence of J. L. Austin as a student. Austin's teaching method "knocked him off ... [his] horse." He was awarded a Junior Fellowship at the Harvard Society of Fellows in 1954. He became an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1956 before completing his Ph.D.

Stanley Cavell was an American philosopher. He was the Walter M. Cabot Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value, Emeritus, at Harvard University. He worked in the fields of ethics, aesthetics and ordinary language philosophy. He produced influential works on Wittgenstein, Austin, Emerson, Thoreau and Heidegger. His work is characterized by its conversational tone and frequent literary references.

The motion picture business arrived in Burbank in the 1920's. First National Pictures bought a 78-acre (320,000 m2) site on Olive Avenue near Dark Canyon in 1926. The property included a 40-acre (160,000 m2) hog ranch and the original David Burbank house. Both properties were owned by rancher Stephen A. Martin. First National was taken over by a company founded by the four Warner Brothers in 1928-29.

Columbia Pictures purchased property in Burbank as a ranch facility. It was used primarily for outdoor shooting. Walt Disney's company had outgrown its Hollywood quarters. It bought 51 acres (210,000 m2) in Burbank. Disney's million-dollar studio was designed by Kem Weber. It was completed in 1939 on Buena Vista Street.

Disney originally wanted to build "Mickey Mouse Park," as he first called it, next to the Burbank studio. His aides finally convinced him that the space was too small. There was opposition from the Burbank City Council. One council member told Disney: "We don't want the carny atmosphere in Burbank." Disney later built his successful Disneyland in Anaheim.

The establishment of the aircraft industry and a major airport in Burbank during the 1930's set the stage for major growth and development. The growth was to continue at an accelerated pace into World War II and well into the postwar era.

Brothers Allan and Malcolm Loughead founded the Lockheed Aircraft Company. They opened a Burbank manufacturing plant in 1928. A year later famed aviation designer Jack Northrop built his historic Flying Wing airplane in his own plant nearby.

Burbank became a naval base in 1944. Sailors and officers learned how to run the PV-1, a ship used for teaching. A school was set up by the Lockheed Air Terminal. It was called Burbank Military Academy.

Burbank's civil defense set up in 1941. The network had seven chapters by 1942. Concrete air raid shelters for thousands were built near the important war plants. Blackout drills were replaced by dim-outs after auto accidents had increased.

The city started its own section of the USO in 1941. A lounge was built. Dances on Saturday were popular with the troops. The Veteran's Service Bureau counted 5,500 men and women in the service from the city.

The Japanese, Germans and Italians were forced out of the city for four years. Resettlement was allowed by late 1945.

Homeless veterans lived in tent camps in Burbank, in Big Tujunga Canyon and at a decommissioned National Guard base in Griffith Park following World War II. The government also set up trailer camps at Hollywood Way and Winona Avenue in Burbank and in nearby Sun Valley.

New homes were built, the economy improved and the military presence in Burbank continued to expand. Lockheed employees numbered 66,500. The company expanded from aircraft to include spacecraft, missiles, electronics and shipbuilding.

A 25 million gallon water reservoir was added in 1947.

There were nearly 42,000 registered voters by 1950. The voters had been numbered at only a little over 600 in 1920. Burbank became known as the gateway to the San Fernando Valley in the 1950's. The population increased to 90,000 by 1954.

Mark Thomas Harmon was born in Burbank, CA on September 2, 1951. He is the only son and the youngest of three children. His parents were Heisman Trophy–winning football player and broadcaster Tom Harmon and actress and artist Elyse Knox (née Elsie Lillian Kornbrath). His maternal grandparents were Austrian immigrants.

He was the star quarterback for the UCLA Bruins football team when he was attending college. The team was in last place when he joined. He led the team to a stunning upset of the two-time defending national champion, Nebraska Cornhuskers in his first game in 1972. The team compiled a 17-5 record when he was quarterback.

He is an American actor. He has been acting since the 1970s. He played Dr. Jack McNeil on Chicago Hope from 1996 to 2000. He has played Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the CBS crime series NCIS since 2003. He was reunited with three of his former Chicago Hope co-stars, Rocky Carroll, Lauren Holly and Jayne Brook during the course of the series. He has also been a producer and executive producer since 2008.

Oakland's economy began to recover as it transitioned to new types of jobs during the mid-1990's. The city participated in large development and urban renewal projects. These were concentrated especially in the downtown area, at the Port of Oakland and at the Oakland International Airport.

Throughout Berkeley, San Francisco, Oakland and surrounding communities there has been a great deal of political activism. The Black Panthers emerged in Oakland. People's Park was formed in Berkeley. San Francisco has been home to years of political activism.

School teachers in the Oakland community felt compelled into the realm of Bay Area labor activism due to unfair working and educational conditions in late 1995 and early 1996. Classrooms often had 30 or more students many of whom didn't feel inclined to listen to an authority of any kind.

Political and labor activity in Oakland reached an unfortunately dramatic level of resistance in February 1996. A strike grew out of the Oakland school district. It was called "Classrooms First." Class sizes were reduced. Salaries were raised. Budgeting for supplies was increased.

Zendaya Coleman was born on September 1, 1996, in Oakland, California. She was the only child of Claire Marie (Stoermer) and Kazembe Ajamu (born Samuel David Coleman). Yokohama (横浜) literally means "horizontal beach". The current area surrounded by Maita Park, Ōoka River and Nakamura River had been a gulf divided by a sandbar from the open sea. This sandbar was the original Yokohama fishing village. Since the sandbar protruded perpendicularly from the land, or horizontally when viewed from the sea, it was called a "horizontal beach."

It is the second largest city in Japan by population after Tokyo. It is the most populous municipality of Japan. It is the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture. It lies on Tokyo Bay south of Tokyo in the Kantō region of the main island of Honshu. It is a major commercial hub of the Greater Tokyo Area.
The Shinasobaya ramen eatery opened for business in 1986.

Construction of Minato Mirai 21 ("Port Future 21") started in 1983. It is a major urban development project on reclaimed land. Minato Mirai 21 hosted the Yokohama Exotic Showcase in 1989. This event saw the first public operation of maglev trains in Japan and the opening of Cosmo Clock 21.

The Cosmo Clock 21 was then the tallest Ferris wheel in the world. The 860m-long Yokohama Bay Bridge opened in the same year.

Yokohama is famous for its abundant sightseeing spots. The Minatomirai area is an entertainment complex with shopping malls, an amusement park and movie theaters. Yamashita Park and Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery are famous sightseeing spots in Motomachi.  You can enjoy various ramen noodles at the Shinyokohama Ramen Museum.

Niigaki Risa was born in Yokohama on October 20, 1988. She is a Japanese actress and former pop singer managed by J.P ROOM. She is a former fifth generation member and leader of the pop group Morning Musume under Hello! Project.

She joined Morning Musume in 2001 along with Takahashi Ai, Konno Asami and Ogawa Makoto. They were the fifth generation. Niigaki was the sub-leader of Morning Musume from 2007 to 2011 while Takahashi was leader. Niigaki Risa inherited her titles as the leader of Morning Musume and also the leader of Hello! Project after Ai-chan graduated.

It was announced that Niigaki would graduate at the end of the Morning Musume Concert Tour 2012 Haru ~Ultra Smart~ on January 2, 2012. She graduated from Morning Musume and Hello! Project on May 18 at Nippon Budokan alongside Mitsui Aika.

Watch
for Greatness
偉大さを見る
Idai-sa o miru
ps48

What is so great about greatness?
Why should I wait despite the lateness?

What can words express about the core of existence?
What can song reveal about the center of human witness?

Words can summon judgments for what is true.
Singleness of mind rules out falsity for you.

It is from primordial existence that things unfold.
Subatomic bonds provide atomic hold
while genes create the cells for life as known.

When these as gifts are arranged
eager service is not disdained.

Evolution takes generations to change
a physical function in a characteristic range.

There are exceptions to every rule.
The hummingbird hums a different tune.

When elements in nature are rearranged
creation is the flux that caused the change.

The bond between atoms is the cause that holds
the things that can be seen and known.

Primal bodies reproduced to make the world.
Each sprang from a mixture of things swirled and curled.

If all sprang from all,
we would be locked in a continual brawl.

Any might take its origin from any ping.
No seed would be required to reproduce the thing.

Men might rise from the sea or land as a scaly breed.
Full fledged fowl could burst from the sky with speed.

Horned cattle might be observed without herds
butting any bump, licking any stump and chewing any bird.

The same fruit would not hang on olden trees as they are incurred.
The wild would haunt with the variant offspring of the absurd.

Each might grow from any by chance or change
were there not limits to the bonds in the atomic range.

Substance is produced from the fixture of bonds.
Life emerges from the resurgence of carbon in protean wands.

Each birth is produced from the seed for the kind.
Each life springs forth upon the shore of the sublime
from its own stuff, from the primal part of kind in mind.

Convergence is that act which precedes the bond.
Assembly is required for the parts to move on as one fury bound bomb
beyond the sound of one mess of parts pawned as a furibond fawn.

All from all cannot become a unit of some substance won.
There would be no emergence for the person to exceed the bodily sum.

The monkey and the crab had a contest on the sand.
The crab ran from side to side to try to leave the land.

The monkey reached high
to show he could touch the sky.

He moved in the way
to delay the crab's exit from the fray.

The crab raised his claws
to attack the monkey paws.

The monkey danced away.
His fight was just for play.

Their reaching for the sky
has become an astral tie.
The constellation is a mark for time.

You may think of me
as ordinary
but I am by no means
to be seen
as a source
as common as quartz.
I am a timeless primal force.

From a rock I was born to course
as energy from the mountain forest.
I come from the ebullience of flowers and fruit for the florist.

I am pure, unrestrained, perpetual motion.
My powers cause a great commotion.

Miracles are an easy test.
I can race through time at eternal rest.

Transformations are easily seen.
I travel as though I were in a dream.
The magic staff that I keep
can sow a seed or start a reef.

Each part is like a hidden flower.
Each atom sings of eternal power.

I can hear infinity in me.
It's more stable than a tree,
yet I am immutably free.

Your soul is the most choice of countries.
Charming masks mask sundry monkeys
looking to evolve as something.

Performers make music in a minor key
about love and careless fortune seen,
but they seem to mistrust their own fantasy.

As their song melts away in the sad quiet light of day
the birds chirp softly in the trees and fountains spout ecstasy past the sight for sway
of sighs from pipes encased in the sensuality of marble delight arresting decay.

Was consciousness about the past
ordained to last
or was it cast
to trash?

There was a time
when we adorned ourselves with hides.

Now the same substance
is clothed with cloth circumference.

A man possessed with trash that lasts
stood downcast waiting for the storm to pass.

He faced the power of the storm to defy the law.
His vision was limited to the things wrong with what he saw.

He felt that he should be able to kill without the threat of lethal imminence.
His definition of threat was too open to his convenience.

The sun sank below the warm mountain span
to cast the shadow of man upon his wanton plan.

His wife called for the baby at her breast.
She told him: “We will stay here and rest”.
The man lifted his eyes and onward pressed.

He walked through foothills in the face of sky
that confessed deep folds in the gaping eye
as it looked at him from a sober place
to say, "I am ready" from the height of space.

He remembered his wife and baby.
He picked up the pace to trace the hope that maybe
he could make his fortune for his child and lady.

He walked or hitched for a month of days
offering to work along the way.

His destination was determined by what had been heard
about work. The determination held less promise than the spoken word.

He allowed no inkling to look behind.
He pressed on to see what he would find.

When he reached the end of earth,
the sky was cast in the darkness of re-birth.

Crimson lightning at the horizon’s edge
foretold anger from the void about the mortal ledge.

The possessed man pleaded for his song to be concealed
from that maddened face now revealed.

The father for all exiled from desert barrens
appealed to the transient from the mountain errand.

“Extend the ends of this tent for me
so safe and concealed I will surely be.”

When they set down some weights of stone
the blond one looked at the man and intoned:

“Do you not see him?” Then the vagrant replied,
"From this specter I can never hide!"

The descendant from the mountain in city slums
surveyed turf from heights and played plastic cans as drums.

He set around his shack a massive wall
so the eye would not see him at all.

The possessed said: “But, he sees me still!”
The mountain man blurted: “Yes, but only 'til
I build a wall so damn imposing
you mofos will recoil before proposing
to besiege it or  raise the ground.
We’ll build a panhandler TransAnt profound
and we’ll lock it down.”

So the manic mechanic, the descendant of smiths
built a homeless shelter of gargantuan width.

It wasn't very sturdy. The materials were weak.
It wasn't fire resistant. Destruction would be easy to  reek.

They guarded the feeble structure from each and every one.
When that left them bored, they launched arrows at the sun.

The alien sancto-forum grew dingy and infernal.
Shadows from the city made the night seem eternal.

They threatened legal people with a sign upon their 'gate.'
It said: “God will never enter our retchid city-state.”

The Junkman told the mad one, “That eye is surely gone.”
The madness of possession said "You couldn't be more wrong.”

“Please,” he plainly pleaded, “Put me underground.
The miners of the darkness don't have to bear the sound
or sight of anything more from outside or around."

“But you’d be dead!” said the Junkman. "That would be the score!"
The mad one misquotes the raven, "Forever nevermore."

He walked down the stone steps to the tomb alone
from the shelter of the shroud to the dwelling place for bone.

Once he reached the darkness of that eternal space
the eye stared back from the visage of that angry crimson face.

The seat of judgment is a frightening place
when destruction is the object for disgrace.

The watch from the mountain
engaged in red letter accounting.

The angry prince from the giant fish
dispersed the raids on the ineffable wish.

The leaders of the earth trembled when they assembled.
They had a task to perform for law to function on the level.

A covenant was formed to work at whatever degree for each.
The constitution was the keep for what we have heard and will see in reach.

The city for the angry prince had to face the dove for destruction in dispersion.
The people found their higher ground in repentance for conversion.

The city of God is a prayer for meaning in the temple of being.
Debate and petition provide the mission to adjust our way of seeing.

Leadership in time takes courage.
Creativity is half a flourish.
The word of love seeks to nourish.

Your name is raised in praise to the world's end.
Your work is the goal to which our will does bend.

Deep in the fathomed mine of never failing skill
lies the treasure of defined design in accord with sovereign will.

Don't judge sovereignty with the feebleness of immediate sense.
Behind each challenge lent in providence lies a grace which is immense.

Honesty that is set by truth provides an objective standard.
It is a treasure by which to measure action as a regal banner.

Behave in a manner in which you could will for others
and law will become the guide by which you watch for druthers.

Life repeats you and me
when we behave accordingly.

The special generation of love
fits your hand like a glove.

I want to believe with trust
that this love will not be shaken by us.

Should a million years pass us by
we can reflect upon the looking glass with a sigh
and know that we lived with class in time.

Love me more than you did in the past.
Had you loved me most, it will have been surpassed.

When we meet to investigate some demand
our speech will seek to stand as grand.

When we go somewhere the way is forward
even when it leads to the corner of the border.

Having fun is our duty as humans.
Play explores imagined ruin
to avoid the actual as pursuant.

The prestige of seed stands
as a responsibility that lasts.

Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly

The fragrant red ixora announced
the torrid swallow tale of flutter with a bounce.

Greed is not a defect in the gold that is desired.
but it burns the man who serves it as perversely as a fire.

My beautiful vision is shining bright for us
I can just imagine the future thrust as just.

It seems like I can grasp it.
We'll get past what is wrong with this.

All of the praises I received when I was young
are in my heart to be sung and sung for fun.

My mission is a position
to treat this condition
without a head on collision.

It only took a minute
to drop myself in it.

Come toward the open sky of heaven
above the mounting steps of ascension.

The dream that was my target
was a haven above the market
beyond the incarnate garden.

The triumph of this juncture
is to sculpt the horticulture.

The lonely tree stood beside the rice field
clothed with the grain it has yet to yield.

The jasmine on the vine
took just a moment to climb the frame in time
next to the house of the local mime.
The growth of green and white has grown so high.

I felt like I had become a mature adult.
My heart was just too busy and lonely to consult.

My tears won't stop the reverie
as I'm embraced in memories.

Greatness is a goal that drives.
Lateness is the toll to survive.

48 Magnus Dominus

1 Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised; *
in the city of our God is his holy hill.

2 Beautiful and lofty, the joy of all the earth, is the
hill of Zion, *
the very center of the world and the city of the great King.

3 God is in her citadels; *
he is known to be her sure refuge.

4 Behold, the kings of the earth assembled *
and marched forward together.

5 They looked and were astounded; *
they retreated and fled in terror.

6 Trembling seized them there; *
they writhed like a woman in childbirth,
like ships of the sea when the east wind shatters them.

7 As we have heard, so have we seen,
in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God; *
God has established her forever.

8 We have waited in silence on your loving-kindness, O God, *
in the midst of your temple.

9 Your praise, like your Name, O God, reaches to
the world's end; *
your right hand is full of justice.

10 Let Mount Zion be glad
and the cities of Judah rejoice, *
because of your judgments.

11 Make the circuit of Zion;
walk round about her; *
count the number of her towers.
12 Consider well her bulwarks;
examine her strongholds; *
that you may tell those who come after.

13 This God is our God for ever and ever; *
he shall be our guide for evermore.

Social Contract
2 Sam. 5:3
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.

Honest for Truth
2 Corinth. 12:6
But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me…

The Catskill Turnpike was brought through the village on its route to Ithaca bringing considerable traffic to the village in 1816.

Rockefeller was born into a large family in upstate New York and was shaped by his salesman father and religious mother. His family moved several times before eventually settling in Cleveland, Ohio.
Rockefeller became an assistant bookkeeper at the age of 16.

He went into a business partnership with Maurice B. Clark and his brothers at 20. His brother William and he founded Rockefeller & Andrews with Samuel Andrews after buying them out. They concentrated on oil refining instead of drilling for oil.

Henry Flagler entered the partnership in 1867. The Rockefeller, Andrews & Flagler company grew by taking-over local refineries. Rockefeller formally founded his most famous company, the Standard Oil Company, Inc., in 1870 as an Ohio partnership with the addition of Bostwick and a silent partner, Stephen V. Harkness. He ran it until 1897.

Rockefeller's wealth soared as kerosene and gasoline grew in importance.  He became the richest person in the country controlling 90% of all oil in the United States at his peak.

Oil was used throughout the country as a light source until the introduction of electricity. It was used as a fuel after the invention of the automobile. Rockefeller gained enormous influence over the railroad industry that transported his oil around the country.

London's traditional status as a major port declined dramatically in the post-war decades. The old Docklands could not accommodate large modern container ships. The principal ports for London were moved downstream to Felixstowe and Tilbury.

The docklands area had become largely derelict by the 1980's. It was redeveloped into flats and offices from the mid-1980s onwards. The Thames Barrier was completed in the 1980s to protect London against tidal surges from the North Sea.

The bubble economy for Japan collapsed in 1990. A massive fall in Tokyo land prices was triggered.
The boom years ended in the 1990's. The entire nation entered two decades of economic stagnation. Tokyo's real estate bubble had burst.

The pessimistic mood was deepened by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Tokyo was not directly damaged, but it suffered from shortages of electricity and the economic impact of the earthquake. Complex manufacturing systems were disrupted.

The rock group Sharam Q originated in 1992. They were not an instant hit, but their fourth single “Jokyo Monogatari” (Going to the Capital) broke the top 50 of the Oricon charts. Tsunku was the lead vocalist.

The band began auditions for a female vocalist in 1997. These auditions aired via the reality show Asayan. Michiyo Heike was crowned the winner. Tsunku decided to give five of the runners-up a chance to become a group in their own right.

Yuko Nakazawa, Natsumi Abe, Kaori Iida, Asuka Fukuda and Aya Ishiguro were given the task of selling 50,000 copies of their demo single "Ai no Tane," in just five days. The girls sold the required number of copies in four days. They became an official group.

Morning Musume's debut single, "Morning Coffee," was released on January 28, 1998 on the One Up Music label and charted at #6 on the Oricon weekly chart

She watches female K-pop artists dance to get ideas on how to perform. The sex appeal that they display sells their performance as a marketable product.

2012

Fukuoka has chic boutiques, laid-back bars, a fantastic high-and-low dining scene and beaches nearby. It sits on the northern tip of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. The city is nearly equidistant to Tokyo, Shanghai and Seoul.

Relatively few tourists have discovered the spot despite its assets. That may soon change with the new transport links.

Cruise ships began docking in the port in 2009. Ferries from South Korea and China had been going there from before then. The Kyushu Shinkansen high-speed rail line was completed in 2011. This line linked Fukuoka to Kagoshima on the southern tip of Kyushu. Two new low-cost airlines, Peach Aviation and AirAsia Japan, started flying to Fukuoka from Osaka and Tokyo in 2012.

"Journey to the West"

Monkey is the ninth in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac.

The dignified Chinese official title of marquis was pronounced 'Hou' during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BCE). This is the same as the pronunciation for ‘monkey’ in Chinese. The animal was thereby bestowed with an auspicious meaning.

Sun Wukong 孫悟空 is the Monkey King of the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West.”  西遊記   It was written by Wu Cheng'en 吳承恩 in the second half of the 16th century CE. It tells a fictional and romanticized version the the Buddhist monk Xuanzang’s real life pilgrimage from China to India in the 7th century.

Monkeys are well off socially. They are best suited for dealing with other zodiacal signs such as snakes, dragons and rats. They tend to have few negative relationships. That said, their connection to tigers and pigs are usually tenuous at best. The crab didn't seem to like the way the monkey acted on the beach very much either.
